Laggy/Choppy trackpad on low battery

I'm having an issue with my MacBook Air M1. The issue is when my Mac is low on battery the trackpad starts behaving abnormal, for example if I am watching some videos on YouTube and I tap on the video timeline to skip to some part, the expected behaviour is to simply skip to that part but in my case, somehow the trackpad goes into hold mode, that is after tapping even I move my cursor anywhere on the whole screen the video's timeline bobber also moves according to the cursor movements. Other example is the hover effects on any sites are lagging behind the actual hover, i.e., when I hover over some cards on websites the hover effects are lagging so bad as if I am using an old 1gb ram pc. The frame rates are also seemingly not good. Does anyone have a solution to this problem or is anybody else having the same issue?

Hey Siddharth_23,

This could be expected behavior with a low battery level. We found "If the trackpad is still not working, your Mac may be showing a low battery alert that you can’t see. Connect your Mac to an electrical outlet or connect an external keyboard to see the alert." here: If the pointer doesn’t move when using the trackpad with Mac - Apple Support

How low is the battery level when you start to notice odd behavior with the TrackPad? If you connect it to the charger, does the behavior continue? Manage your Mac laptop’s battery - Apple Support

Keep us posted.

Take care!

Hi Siddharth_23,

Let's continue with trying to restart your Mac in safe mode and testing the trackpad. This isn't a remedy as much as it is an isolation tool. Testing in safe mode would help rule out third-party software conflicts specific to the user account. Here's how to complete this: Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Test the trackpad while in safe mode. Once you've completed this, restart to exit safe mode and test the trackpad again.

Kind regards.

Hi Siddharth_23,

Thanks for letting us know more. It seems like the issue may be that the Mac itself is running slowly. If that's the case, please check out the information and suggestions outlined in this link, which may help correct that issue: If your Mac runs slowly

If your Mac runs slowly

If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check.

* Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk or an external storage device, then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk. macOS can also help you optimize storage by storing files in the cloud and helping you identify files you no longer need. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click General in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down). Click Storage on the right, then click the storage recommendations you want to use.
* An app you’re using may require more memory than your Mac has easily available. You can use Activity Monitor to see how much memory your Mac and apps are using. See View memory usage in Activity Monitor. Also see the documentation that came with the app to find out its system requirements.
* Quit any app that isn’t compatible with your Mac. For example, an app may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the app for information about its system requirements.
* To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click General  in the sidebar, then click About on the right.
* To see which graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click General  in the sidebar. Click About on the right, then click System Report. Click Graphics/Displays to see the name of the graphics card installed your computer.
* Quit any apps you’re not using.
* If you have problems with your disk, use Disk Utility to verify and try and fix any issues.

If you continue to experience an issue, please contact Apple Support for help, as they'll been the best position to assist. You may be able to reach them here: Get Support

Thanks!

Thanks for the response but it didn't solved the issue. The problem has escalated even more at this date. Sometimes my starts to hang and sometimes the trackpad is able to move the cursor around but the click doesnt work. As soon as i click something, it hangs for a while and then nothing happens. i had to force restart my macbook. When i ran my macbook in safemode and ran diagnostic test, it said there are no issues.
