Preview Randomly Locked My PDF File

Woke up this morning and one of my PDF files became password protected without my knowledge. No one else has access to my Mac device. Thankfully I was able to recover the file from a repository but could anyone tell me what could have occurred?

Much thanks if anyone can give any input. Currently backing up all my files in case another file gets screwed.
