When sending atext the phone actually started to type letters by itself

Is this a case of it completing phrases by guessing what you were going to say, or just random characters? If it is random characters it will likely happen in other apps like email; this would indicate either a failing display or, if it only happens when the phone is plugged in, a bad cable.
