External Boot Drive using NVMe drive. Panic Errors on Sleep/Hibernate/

My internal *HDD on my 2017 iMac had failed, and am using an external boot drive, which works perfectly. The only problem is that any Sleep/Hibernate/ functions must be turned off or I will always get a Panic Error. The only one I want to use if the screen sleep, but that causes the same issue.

The only internal drive that does work is the (1.20gb) NVMe half of the Fusion Drive.

SUCCESS!

Your suggestions worked perfectly for short durations of time. If left overnight, it would panic again. Armed with your suggestions, It occurred to me that my second display via HMDI may be factoring into the problem.

Before Ventura, I never had this issue, and never bothered to physically turn off the second display as the 'monitor sleep function' worked well for both screens. I again activated the 'Display Off When Inactive' and then physically turned off my second display. Problem solved. I appreciate your help.

That's exactly what I did, which caused the the most recent and attached panic.

Ventura's new settings are wacky compared to previous macOS preferences.

I thinking the dead HDD half of my internal Fusion Drive may partially be the problem. The NVMe half of the Fusion Drive works fine though.

The internal drives could very well be a problem. I would try erasing both and leave them empty.

I'm also thinking the iMac doesn't like to boot from an an external drive (NVMe/TB3).

A macOS on either of the internal drives, can create confusion for the startup manager.

It is absolutely stable when ALL sleep functions are turned off.

I know it was possible to only allow display sleep in earlier macOS versions.

There is no Display Sleep in Ventura, it was/is renamed "Turn Display Off"

Personally I would double check for a hidden setting that you may have missed.

Sounds like Computer Sleep is cutting power to or losing the connection with the external startup disk and causing the Panic.

What you want to achieve, is for only the Display to Turn Off after sometime of inactivity.

Try doing the opposite of > Set sleep and wake settings for your Mac - Apple Support

and > Change Energy Saver settings on a Mac desktop computer - Apple Support

You may also need to disable the screensaver and the auto logout settings.

Unfortunately, while the internal HDD is seen by the Disk Utility, I cannot erase/format it. I've also used tools like Carbon Copy and Disk Drill. I certainly do not wish to remove the internal NVMe as I use it a Cache.

So I have set Display Off When Inactive, but same problems. But, when I deactivated the Screensaver When Inactive, then the Display Off When Inactive WORKS. At least in the short term. I'll see if it survives the night. Thank You!
