what is a HSM monitor and why does it appear on screen on start up

Hi on start up my iMac displays a dialogue notification box that says "Background items added" then

underneath that is "HSM Monitor" is an item that can run in the background. you can manage this on the login items settings, On investigation in the login settings there's an exec file that says HNM monitor awaiting update. No matter what i do its always there on start up and i don't want to delete it incase its important

iMac 24″, macOS 13.5

Whatever it is, it is not a required macOS component. If you do not know what it is, remove it from Login Items.


It may be related to some Microsoft process or service: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/key-vault/managed-hsm/access-control, but that is something only you can know. For example, if that Mac is owned or controlled by someone other than you, such as an employer or educational institution, ask whoever is responsible for maintaining it.
