Don’t know what gesture makes iPhone 14 Plus shut off the screen

Hello!

I usually keep up to date regarding gestures and features on iOS.

but, this has been bugging me for a while.

When I place the iPhone on portrait position both standing on a stand, or flat on the table, it shuts the screen off with the sound effect.

But I have not touched the Off button by any means. When I try to reproduce the possible gesture that might have triggered it, I can’t succeed. But it keeps happening one in a while. And I still can’t explain myself what makes it turn off the screen. And it is NOT because of the 30 second period for automatically turning off, nor by touching the Off button.

Can anyone help me understand?

Thanks in advance!

If your iPhone 14 Plus running iOS 16 is turning off the screen unexpectedly when you place it in a portrait position on a stand or flat on a table, and you're certain that it's not due to the automatic screen timeout settings or any physical button presses, there could be a few other potential reasons for this behavior. Here are some possibilities to consider and steps you can take to troubleshoot:

  1. Proximity Sensor Issue: iPhones have proximity sensors that detect when the phone is near your face during a call, but they can also trigger screen actions when they detect an object nearby. Make sure there is nothing obstructing or covering the front of the phone, especially around the top area where the proximity sensor is located.
  2. Screen Protector or Case Interference: If you're using a screen protector or a case on your iPhone, it might be interfering with the proximity sensor or the screen itself. Try removing the screen protector and see if the issue persists. Also, ensure that the case is not pressing any buttons unintentionally.
  3. Environmental Factors: Sometimes, external factors like strong magnetic fields or interference from nearby electronic devices can affect the sensors on your iPhone. Try using your iPhone in a different location to see if the issue persists.
  • Third-party App: Check if any apps are running in the background that might be causing the screen to turn off. You can close any apps that you are not using by swiping them up from the bottom of the screen.
