Apple vs Google to store photos?

it is difficult to give an answer without knowing what you will do with all these old photos.

If you will use them only on your MacBook you could just get an external SSD and store them locally.

Why do you think that an online / cloud storage would be needed?

Are you planning to work with these photos on different devices?

I have all my originals stored locally and smaller copies are synced with iCloud between my different devices.

To have them locally will also allow you to run backups of your data.

With online storage it is often very difficult to have a full backup of these data.
