Good quality USB storage devices should be usable with your iPad. However, as your first generation iPad Pro has a Lightning connector, you should also understand that many USB storage devices will require more power than your iPad Lightning port alone can supply.

To connect USB storage to your iPad, you will require an Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter - to which you must also connect your iPad Power Adapter. The Power Adapter must be rated at least 12W (2.4A @5V) - although a 20-30W Power Adapter is recommended.

To be recognised by iPadOS, the attached USB storage device must be formatted to FAT, FAT32, exFAT, APFS or HFS+ with a single partition. Microsoft NTFS and other proprietary device formatting are not supported.
