If I have 256 gigs on my new iPad, why do I need to pay for extra iCloud storage?

I have more than enough storage on my new iPad,256G. I have been paying for extra storage for iCloud because I had maxed out mine up in my old iPad.

Why do I still need to pay for extra iCloud storage?

iPad Air, iOS 11

Because a backup of even a fraction of 256 GB of “stuff” doesn’t fit in 5 TB of free iCloud storage, less other app usage.

Backups can also be performed to a local Mac or PC, if you want to do that.

Backups? Why backups? The only way to mark data as being valuable is with backups.

Otherwise, you’re one drop, dunk, fire, failure, mistake, corruption, loss, or theft away from posting a plea for help recovering precious photos or other data. Data recovery which typically isn’t happening. Not without a backup.
