Where do my photos go in back up?
I want to back up my photos to get them off my phone to make more space. If they are backed up to the cloud can I just delete them off my phone and have them available on icloud?

No. If you delete your pictures off of your device, they will also delete in iCloud. You can save space by optimizing photos (settings > photos), or by removing the phones off of your device onto your computer
