Samsung 57" 8k display resets resolutions on wake from sleep (Mac Mini M2 Pro)

I have a S57CG95*N Odyssey Neo G9 57" display and it allows the full 8k (7680 x 2160) resolution after reboot, but when I put my Mac to sleep overnight and wake it up, the maximum resolution is set to 5120 x 1440 and there are no higher resolutions available until I reboot. I'm connecting using the HDMI port.

Is there a known fix for this?

I managed to resolve this completely by purchasing a USB C to DisplayPort 2.1 (40Gbps) cable

Now whenever the machine wakes, it correctly picks up the maximum resolution.

I strongly suspect use of an 8K HDMI 2.1 (48Gbps) cable will also solve the problem.

Good news! I've been able to get the display working flawlessly with the DisplayPort 2.1 (40Gbps) cable: no flickering and always wakes from sleep at the highest resolution (7680 x 2160).

It seems that when using the DisplayPort connection, the monitor is particularly sensitive to the power supply (which was not an issue when using HDMI)... so by having power for the monitor come through a surge protector it's resolved the issue completely.

I have this exact same issue with the 57" Samsung monitor on the Mac Mini M2 Pro.

If the machine has only been in a sleep state for a short period then the problem doesn't occur, but any longer than that and the monitor reverts to a lower resolution.

The only workaround is to use the PBP mode on the monitor, to set it up as two 4K displays side-by-side - then you get the full resolution every time. It's not quite as nice as it being driven as a single monitor (eg windows don't stay put on the correct part of the screen), but at least it always wakes from sleep with everything at the full resolution (and you don't need an M2 Pro to do this - you can use just the Mac Mini M1).

Hi... an update on this.

It's true that a USB C to DisplayPort 2.1 (40Gbps) cable has fixed the problem with the monitor correctly picking up the resolution every time after sleep... however, I've found that with that cable the screen can flicker intermittently.

Sometimes it's absolutely perfect for five or ten minutes, and then there's the odd flicker for an instant on one quarter of the screen (which is far from perfect, but which I could probably live for a while)... but other times the flicker can be multiple times in a few seconds, and quite extreme (screen going black for a second or so) which is terrible.

So, I've ordered an 8K HDMI 2.1 (48Gbps) cable to see if that fixes both issues (I never see any flickering over HDMI), and I should be able to provide an update tomorrow.

Hi, the M2 Mac mini Technical Specifications page shows that the M2 Pro version supports "One display with up to 8K resolution at 60Hz" (although it seems to suggest it only does that over HDMI, when in fact it does it over Thunderbolt also).

I happen to have an M1 Pro MacBook to hand, and I just tried it with the 57" display, on both Thunderbolt and HDMI, and unfortunately the MacBook does not drive the display at the full resolution on either port (it only allows you to select a maximum of 5120 x 1140).

There is utility for Mac OS called "Stay" which is specifically built for this fixing the issue with windows moving around... so that's worth a try.

And I did try that myself (when I had the screen set up as two 4K screens side-by-side) but as I recall, it didn't do exactly what I wanted so I instead decided to upgrade to something which could natively support the 8K resolution.

Hi Justin.

Yeah, I tried to upvote my prior message myself so it would be easier for others to see it, but apparently the system doesn't allow that!

Yeah - I did post a link to that in a prior post, but here it is again: [now edited to show the correct link!]

I think the 3ft option is the best option.

I am still getting the odd flicker every-now-and again, although I haven't seen it all in the past few days, and I think it may be related to fluctuations on my home's 110V electrical supply (I noticed it was doing it several times one day when the drier in the laundry room next door was on), so I'm going to see if a voltage regulator on the power supply to the monitor fixes the issue completely.
