Samsung 57" 8k display resets resolutions on wake from sleep (Mac Mini M2 Pro)

(Firmware 1003.0 is also out, and I've upgraded. I'm not optimistic that it will help, but I will report back if I see good results)

Yeah, I tried the 1003 firmware update before moving to the Dual-port 2.1 cable, and it didn't fix the issue with the display waking from sleep with the wrong resolution on HDMI on Mac OS.

Unfortunately an 8K HDMI 2.1 (48Gbps) cable does not solve the problem - when the machine wakes from sleep (after an extended period) it defaults to the lower resolution of 5120 x 1140.

So, unfortunately it seems using a DisplayPort 2.1 cable is the best (but still flawed) compromise unless you're prepared to shutdown and restart the machine between sessions, until either Samsung update the firmware to fix this, or Apple addresses it in a future update.

Any idea if this monitor will work with a M1 Pro at full resolution with single cable? According to the spec sheets I don't see how it should work with a Mac Mini M2 Pro, so curious if I am able to upgrade. Currently running the 49 inch Odyssey G9.

Thank you Phil, especially for trying the M1 Pro 🙂. Very helpful. So I guess my only option would be two cables for now? I see others mentioning that it has issues when coming back from sleep doing it that way.

That is true regarding the spec sheet. In my head G9 had higher resolution than 8K, but it does not of course.

Yeah, using it as two 4K screens side-by-side is very very good - almost as good as driving it natively.

The only thing that I found irritating was that when waking from sleep the windows on different spaces would have shifted around.

One other creative option would be to trade-in your current MacBook Pro (when I checked last night Apple's trade in offer for mine was $900), and trade up to a M2 Pro (or even M3 Pro) machine (you can get a refurbished 14" M2 Pro MacBook Pro for $1600-ish).

Hm, I use mine for work and makes it sleep maybe 5-10 times a day so if that happens every time that would quickly become frustrating. Is there no way of mitigating it that you know of? (the window shift thing). I got my MBP from work, dont think I can upgrade it just yet because of company policy.

This is great news - I finally got a second monitor after the first died in <12 hours, and was just discovering this issue with my replacement. I hadn't noticed the "All Replies" button until today, and have tried to upvote your responses accordingly!

Can I ask what DP2.1->USB-C cable you're using? I've looked around, and while there are plenty of DP<->DP cables, I've basically only been able to find one single DP2.1->USB-C cable, and the reviews on it are giving me serious pause. Thanks for any info!

Saw that link, but I thought it appeared/appears to be for an HDMI<->HDMI cable, not DP or USB-C?

Flicker from weak electricity wouldn't surprise me; I had an old TV set with a similar problem in a previous, older house!

Can you please share the details of the cable you purchased?

Thank you Phil, I have some cables on order as per this discussion and will give them a shot. Hopefully a firmware update fixes this for us soon.
