Airtag Connection Lost after closing find my app

I have two airtags. Connected them to my iPhone. I can see them in the Find My app. Once I close the Find My App, the connection to the airtags is lost. If I remove and add the battery to one of them and then go through the process to connect it to the iPhone, they both reappear in Find My. Close the app again and they both disappear. Haven't used them for 6 months so there's been several iPhone updates - not sure when this starting happening until today when I'm trying to use one of them again. Currently running IOS 16.6.1 I've gone though the Airtag reset process and rebooted the phone several times. Airtags connect as expected.

Any ideas?

This is something weird. Mere closing of Find My App should not disconnect AirTags. There is something amiss here.
