in case of work mandated antivirus... which one?

hello,

i'm aware of the many times questions regarding the use of antivirus software have been asked already, and i have read many of the most recent and in depth responses; thank you for those

and, if it were up to me, i would continue to not use one, and i still will try to make a strong argument for and offer an alternative to not doing so (any help with what to say exactly would be much appreciated), however...

i'm applying for a job, where i have to make use of my own equipment, and part of the requirements is to make use of an antivirus program (in addition to google chrome, which i also have been trying to avoid!)

in case i'm not able to reach an agreement with them about guaranteeing the security of my computer through means more appropriate and effective for macOS than an antivirus program... what program would you recommend i use?

i twitch just by thinking of having to install one, for i had to put a lot of time, energy and effort into being able to acquire this computer, and would like to take care of it the best i can

but... i also need to work

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 13.5

Tell your employer that installing third party antivirus apps on your Mac will decrease security and performance.

If they insist, use MalwareBytes manually as needed not auto in the background.

I don't have any experience using MalwareBytes. I've never used any antivirus on my personal computers - not even once. Back when I used to work remote, the US government mandated use of an enterprise version of Symantec and I used that (on my US-governement supplied Mac). Of course, Symantec was years behind in their OS support, so I was always running an ancient version of macOS. Such is life.

From interactions here in the forum, Malwarebytes has historically caused far fewer problems than any other Mac antivirus product. However, that may not be the case in the future. I have seen a few sporadic cases of Malwarebytes causing massive amounts of CPU usage. But even these problems are far less common than with any other antivirus products. And and I have seen indications that Malwarebytes is moving more heavily into that "enterprise-grade industry leading security endpoint protection" market. What that means is that our past experience with Malwarebytes may not be valid for future installations. Anything goes in the "security" industry. It's really crazy. There is no way to tell what the future will bring.

If you must do this, at least setup a VM and stay in that environment.

We often recommend using MalwareBytes manually. It is the only app I would use. It is not an antivirus app but anti malware.

You could also use the often recommended etrecheck manually. This app is often recommended here to locate apps/configurations that could be contributing to issues on the Mac.

The macOS operating system already include multiple levels of malware protection. Whatever you have seen or read on the internet is false. The only way to get malware installed on a Mac is for you - the user - to manually bypass multiple Apple protections and install it - on purpose. In most cases, people do this to run some expensive software for free, or to watch a free movie. Usually all they get it malware instead.

Apple provides excellent protection for your computer against malware. But Apple always allows the user to override those protections. If you find yourself repeatedly being tricked into installing malware, then 3rd party antivirus protection might be useful. But the important part to remember is that, in this case, your Mac doesn't need protection from the malware, it needs protection from you.

I realize you specifically didn't want to engage in this discussion. That's fine. I don't want to either. But I did want to point this out. The internet isn't true. It just isn't.

Full Stop. Sound the klaxons. Flash the red lights. Engage sirens. This is bad, bad, bad news.

You could buy a new computer and use that. Your employer should reimburse you for the purchase. If they refuse, did I mention how much of a bad idea this would be? Do you already have a job? Don't quit your current job for these scammers!

part of the requirements is to make use of an antivirus program (in addition to google chrome, which i also have been trying to avoid!)

If they require it, then they should provide something. Any old "industry-leading security protection endpoint" that you've never heard of will be fine. It will introduce all kinds of security holes and bugs. Everyone should be happy.

Remember, you'll never be able to uninstall this software. These kinds of apps are junk. Their uninstaller don't work. You'll need to completely erase the hard drive and reinstall the operating system to remove it. You'll have to do that fairly soon once you realize the job is a scam and they aren't going to pay you.

Then buy a Chromebook. If you are required to use Google products do not buy a Mac.

Definitely do not use of any of your personally owned ones. Yikes.

Despite repeated claims that it is "safe" or "effective" or "trusted" there are plenty of reports on this site of the "Malwarebytes" product causing problems:

An aside - but will they also Mandate you turn over the Serial Number of your personal Computer to them ?

I ask as they may also Mandate Enrolling this computer into their Mobile Digital Management Service.

In which case, they now Control the computer hence forth and can Install whatever Software Control they deem necessary on this computer

Effectively you the Owner of this machine is No Longer the Owner

Should these condition appear imminent to happen - suggest they agree to Supply their Corporate Equipment Computer for you to work on
