Charging MacBook Air M2 vis USB-C

Hi there!

I've recently forgotten my original magsafe Macbook Air M2 charger at my other house and there's not way for me to get it back again for about 10 days. I have few intense days coming when I need to use my laptop intensively and I was wondering if it is alright to charge it via the USB-C port using a double-sided USB-C cable and the charger block from my iPhone 13. I want to know if this would damage the battery and if there would be any difference in the power in-take? Thanks.

I have the same question. I have a 2023 Macbook Air M2 15" which uses a mag charger. I am traveling and did not bring my mag charger. Can I connect to an iPhone type charger to my Macbook's USB-C port to charge it?

You can use any USB-C power adapter to charge your Mac.

"If your Mac uses USB-C to charge, you can charge your Mac laptop with any USB-C power adapter or display. "

The tiny iPhone power adapter will not provide sufficient power to charge your Mac's battery while using it simultaneously, but using it will not damage anything.

Charging options:

MacBook Air (2022 or later)

On the MacBook Air, you can fast charge with the following combinations of power sources and cables:

  • 140W USB-C Power Adapter + USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable or USB-C charge cable
  • 96W USB-C Power Adapter + USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable or USB-C charge cable
  • 70W USB-C Power Adapter + USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable or USB-C charge cable
  • 67W USB-C Power Adapter + USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable or USB-C charge cable (13.6-inch models only)
  • Apple Studio Display + Thunderbolt cable
  • Apple Pro Display XDR + Thunderbolt 3 cable
  • External third-party display capable of delivering 85W + Thunderbolt 3 cable or USB-C cable

140W would be the largest for now to use on a late model MacBook Air.

I think this is too much and probably heavier than the others on the list. I have the 96W.

"Your Mac charges over only one port at a time, so connecting multiple power adapters to the USB-C ports and MagSafe 3 port (if present) won't charge your Mac faster … If you connect more than one power source, your Mac charges only from the cable and power adapter or display providing the most power."

Fast charging will take you "up to 50 percent battery in around 30 minutes." I don't know if using a power source that can provide more than 70W of Power Delivery power will cut the time any further. I have not seen the results of any experiments along those lines, or any specifications that are detailed enough to answer that question.

Your phone charger is about 20 watts.

Your mac charger are usually more 50, 100 watts with a cable that can handle that current.

You will likely be maxing out your phone charger and cable so it will be dissipating much heat.

I would keep a careful watch on both to be sure you don't burn something and catch something on fire while using your computer.

When the computer is shut down or asleep, you may not be drawing as much current to more slowly charge the computer.

There are multiple ports to charge into, I would avoid using two chargers simultaneously into any computer.

Re: “The charging cable for MacBook Air is not working. I have another C cable that fits into my MacBook but the end is the type that fits in my IPhone port. If phone fully charged but not in use, does it have enough to charge MacBook?”

I don’t believe that any of the iPhones which have Lightning ports are advertised as being able to charge another device. I believe that the iPhone 15 series phones, which have USB-C ports, may have a limited ability to charge other devices. But even there, I would not count on the phone being able to power a notebook computer.
