My macbook pro randomly beeps, accompanied by a brief dimming of the screen. I can't detect any pattern or any trigger to explain it. Does anyone know what causes this?

This was driving me crazy for quite a while and I see other people have had the same issue.

I think I figured it out. It's nothing to do with auto dimming in response to ambient light or power management and no amount of mucking around with your mac's notification settings or restarting your mac, or using safe mode will fix it. I even got the same strange notification if no apps at all are open. The cause appears to be related to the shoddy interaction between the mac and the windows world. If you are using an outlook account on your mac you may have noticed strange behaviors in both apple mail and apple calendar and they have to do with poor interaction between the two worlds; bugs that nobody wants to take responsibility for. The clue to understanding these random notifications has to do with the fact the sound is a bit like the new mail alert. You cannot stop it with mac settings. Somehow, microsoft is able to shove these notifications onto your mac even when apple mail is not even open. To stop them you will need to use a browser to go to your outlook settings in your microsoft account. Under general > notifications make sure all these settings are turned off (ie unchecked):

Verify accessibility feature did not get turned on...

Sounds like a hardware issue to me. When the charger is disconnected, the macOS default setting is to dim the screen a bit. When the charger is connected to a USB-C Mac, the Mac will make a single beep sound.

If you are using a USB-C charging cable, then try connecting the charger to another USB-C port especially on the other side of the laptop. You can also try rotating the connector of the USB-C charge cable 180 degrees upside down in case the USB-C port is half bad. Neither of these are meant to be a fix, but just a troubleshooting tool to identify a problem and to possibly continue working on the laptop until it can be repaired.

Also try unplugging the power adapter from the electrical outlet for a minute to reset the charger's internal circuitry. And try another electrical outlet.

Keep in mind the problem could be with the laptop, the power adapter, or the charging cable. You can also try another power adapter and charging cable.

Try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected. Make sure to have the power adapter connected when running the diagnostics. Unfortunately the diagnostics don't detect most issues, but if they do report an issue, then you can believe a hardware issue exists.

Make sure to disconnect all external devices from the laptop. Plus connect the charger directly to the laptop since adapters, docks, hubs may not allow the full power of the charger to reach the laptop.

I'm a certified apple technician. It is definitely not a hardware issue. It's some sort of notification that is arriving on my mac from an unknown source. The leading candidate is one of the email accounts registered on apple mail, specifically the outlook account that is managed by one of my businesses. The windows and mac online universes are notorious for not communicating properly.

BEEP NO MORE! I had the same beeping sound driving me crazy for over a year. Apple support couldn't find the cause but through eliminating all the possible causes led me to unplug my Bose speaker that was on my desk and using a usb port. I unplugged the usb wire and the random beeps disappeared. I'm thinking that the Bose kept recharging itself when it felt like it thus triggering that beep. Perhaps you have something like my Bose causing your beeps. The last few days have been beepless. Good luck.
