No longer able to delete iPhone mail address recents

In the past I have occasionally deleted unwanted iOS mail address recents. However, I can no longer do this. I searched online, and there is meant to be a small marker, such as an “I” in a blue circle alongside each address, from which a drop-down menu including removal from recents. can be reached. However, almost none of the recents had this “I” in a blue circle. I am on iOS 16.6.1, but this problem has existed through several releases. I consider myself an advanced, but not expert, user of iOS and macOS and their predecessors over many years.

any suggestions welcomed,

iPhone SE, iOS 14

Hi KRDHarris,

To clarify, are the emails you see also in your contacts? If an email address is attached to a contact, it's expected for it to show in Compose when you start typing in characters in the To field.

Only Siri suggested contacts would have the information symbol to then remove the suggestion. If you want to turn Siri Suggestions off, see the info here:

Siri Suggestions on iPhone - Apple Support

"Turn Siri Suggestions on or off for an app

Siri Suggestions are on by default for your apps. You can turn them off or change the settings at any time.

  1. Go to Settings  > Siri & Search, scroll down, then select an app.
  2. Turn settings on or off."

Cheers!

Hey there KRDHarris,

While this may be expected behavior, the earlier message does show the steps to turn off Siri suggested email addresses when composing a new Mail message from either device.

While this may be an option you'd need to go with, we certainly understand that this wasn't always the case, and that the little info button appeared next to all Siri suggested email addresses in the past. While you may need to contact Apple Support about this, we'd like to learn more about what's happening, along with ruling out some basics:

  1. You mentioned this began several versions ago, but do you recall when it first started occurring on your iPhone, and did it start to occur on your Mac at the same time?
  2. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out Restart your iPhone and the section ‘Restart your Mac' here: Shut down or restart your Mac
  3. Have you already tried toggling Siri Suggestions for Mail off, then back on, to see if that has any effect?

Cheers!

Thanks very much for your quick response.

when I enter someone’s first name in the To: field, over 30 suggestions show up, most of them not in my contacts, including ones specifically deleted from them, and several being part of a list of addressees for previously sent email messages. The only one with an “I” in a blue circle was an address that is not in my contacts.

I really want to avoid accidentally sending to an address that looks similar to a valid address, but have found no way to stop it coming up,

I hope this info helps you better understand my problem,

thanks
