MacBook Pro email fails to download messages after reading on iPhone

I recently upgraded my OS to Big Sur 11.7.10 Now when I download emails on my iPhone, they will no longer also download on my MacBook Pro afterwards. If I don't read them first on my iPhone then they WILL download to my MacBook Pro. What settings do I change to solve this?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.7

verify your Mail server settings you are using IMAP

Note—

IMAP accounts stay on the server, so no local loss, when you re-sync

POP accounts download and remove from the server—therefor save your inbox/sent box if you want them

“On My Mac" is just that, local folders you created and moved mail into. So no loss

For problem accounts the go to way to sort things out is to delete the account(s) from the Mail.app, then add it back.
