Stop the iphone lighting up at night

How to stop iPhone screen illuminating when charging?

This is one of those issues that Apple drives me mad with... it seems like basic functionality to me.*

My nightstand wireless charger has a tiny blue LED to indicate a when a phone is charging properly.

Nice.

But when I put my iPhone on it - in an otherwise dark bedroom - the iPhone's screen illuminates the entire room for several seconds. Ridiculous, when preparing for sleep!

I've searched the menus for a way to prevent this, but cannot find anything. A previous trip to an Apple Store was no help, the Genius had no answer. Maybe iOS14 has something hidden away?

So, is there a way to prevent me being temporarily blinded other than covering the iPhone with a black velvet cloth; or squeezing my eyes shut (which doesn't work by the way)?
