It is more ridiculous that you need to add a contact for an unknown number just to block them from further sending you texts. Why they do not just simply add the option to block a number upon receiving the first text (that is unknown) boggles my mind. Someone truly wasn't thinking.

Thank you. So, am I to understand that there is no way to block these text from arriving to my phone?
Other than adding unknowns to a list, there appears to be no benefit to this feature since they continue to pop up in Messages along with all the rest.
You can filter out the texts from unknown contacts (names that are not in your contacts). Once you start this, then those texts from unknown senders will appear under a separate tab in the Messages app.
Open Settings ➡️ Messages ➡️ Filter Unknown Senders: Turn this switch to ON.

If we can’t block messages from ppl not on our contact list, just putting them ( out of sight-out of mind) will just use up precious memory on my cell!
That setting moves the messages to a separate folder that you don't have to look at.

If they are both out of sight and out of mind, that means you're not thinking about them at all. Why would you need to think about things in a folder you never look at?
