Missing plugin on import footage even though I have not yet started my project and I have not used any plugin

Since this afternoon, when I import, I keep having on some of my footage Missing Plugin error message. Even though it is a brand new project and that I am not even using any plugin yet. It took me 3 hours to finally import all my footage without this error message. For instance, here I am importing 3 files from my DJI SD card. Two are working and for one, I keep having "a missing plugin" message. I had the same problem earlier today with some of my 4K footage. For some reason, some had the error message and others not. I have not started my project yet. We are just at the import phase which took me all afternoon.

For the import, I am choosing "Copy to" (working from an external drive).

Thanks in advance for you help.

As unlikely as this is:

Select the DJI_0246.mp4 file in the Event browser and go to Clip > Open Clip. Then see if there's anything listed in the Effects Inspector on the right side above Compositing. It will just be like: one line with a label and a checkbox on the left if there is an effect applied that's missing. If so, you can select it and delete it.

If you accidentally applied a Default Video Effect (default shortcut Option-E) that was an Effects Preset with multiple effects, there may be more than one effect listed. The "missing ones" will just be that one line with no parameters I described above.

I downloaded your file, and imported it into FCP 10.6.8 without any issue.

We have been focusing so much on the codecs that we forgot to try one very basic trick in FCP users' toolbox... deleting preferences. We often say that when the application misbehaves (and it seems to be in this case), it is worth a try to delete the preferences... To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting FCP X and click Delete Preferences. The application will start in a default state, and open an "Untitled" library.

Reopen the library you were working on, set the preferences the way you like them, and try again. Do the files still show the error?

Indeed, the two look identical, and it is a mystery why one would cause a "Missing Plug-in" warning.

Does that file play correctly in Quicktime Player? Does it help if you optimize the file in FCP or, if that fails, if you recompress the file using the Finder (control-click->Quick Actions->Encode Selected Video File), or Quicktime Player (File->Export)?

Yes, it does. Both of them play perfectly in QuickTime but for the 246 I have an error message in FCP "Plugin missing". But as I said. This is not these files which are the problem. I had the same problem while importing earlier 4K footage which are all the same format... So I wonder if this could be a problem with FCP more than with the files in themselves.

Luis, I did what you said Quick Action - Encode Selected Video File and it worked. I don't have the plugin missing error message. But I am worried as I lost so much time today importing my 4K footage with which I had the same issue on some footage. Can I get back to you if this is happening again tomorrow. I am happy that this shot could finally be imported but I am scared that this is a half solution and that something is wrong with my Final Cut Pro.

I can’t say exactly how, but our collective experience over the years has shown that the preferences (plist) files for applications can often become corrupted-for example if the application crashes it will not have the opportunity to properly save its preferences, and then the file becomes corrupted. Many many many times as then FCP starts and reads the plist it then behaves oddly. How it can behave incorrectly in so many different ways when this happens is beyond my level of expertise.

Hello Luis! They are all the same format yes. Vertical footage 25fps shot 2mn apart. I didn't change anything. What is weird is that Final Cut Pro copy the file in my Final Cut Pro Optimised media file and it looks fine but in my final cut pro timeline I have got an error message "Missing plugin". What does that mean if I don't even use any plugin?

Is media info a one time payment or I will have to pay for it every month? Because sorry but I might not use it much... I think the problem is somewhere else because I had the same problem earlier with my 4K footage which has the same format. It kept saying "Missing plugin" and then, I kept deleting, shutting down FCP and I finally didn't have the error message anymore... But it took a while and I cannot work like this.

Hello! There? I don't see one. If there was one, it should be above Compositing, isn't it?

Such a mystery... As I said, I had the same problem with other footage today... Real pain in the ***. Thank you though for the shortcut Option E. I didn't know about that and indeed, sometimes you accidentally apply a video effect without knowing. I will be careful.

I will send you the one from the DJI. It is currently loading. The ones from my Sony FX30 that caused the problem are too heavy for wetransfer (5,44GB). But I have put one of them in media info. Maybe you can see if there is a problem with these info. It's Chinese to me. Can you tell me if an image is showing? I have a question mark when I upload the screenshot. Thank you.
