Custom tones dissapeared after iOS 17 update

EVERY contact has a different custom ringtone that is no longer than 25 seconds, as well as a different custom text message tone. By this, I will know who is calling without having to take my iPhone from my pocket. I get the text messages read to me, and I will dictate a reply if not call back if it's necessary. More than that, all of the other things in iOS needing a notifier have custom ones that are louder. My ringer volume is a minimum of 90% for a reason, so that I would know these events are happening. I have operated this way since I got my XR, and for this change to happen now is extremely disappointing. This must be changed and the new tones kept for those who still wish to use them.

Well, I wasn't purposely changing settings. Had I known it would no longer be supported beforehand, I would have stayed far away from that menu completely and prevent myself from wondering why nothing I purchased was listed. Ha!

I just did the same thing just in case and, lo and behold, can't located it anywhere on my phone but it is in my iTunes under Tones when my phone is connected to my computer... Hope this gets resolved quickly.

Apple mail app is affected also, as is any other app that allows you to select notification tones. Unfortunately the system notification tone can’t be changed either, but that’s not specifically an iOS 17 issue. AFAIK, there has never been a way to change the system notification tone, even to another built-in tone.

What did you upgrade from? I have never been able to have custom text or ringtone sounds on my iPhone. I have only ever had iOS 16, but I have always been disappointed about not having access to these unless paid. Personally, I like Apple better than Android, but if anything to win me over to Android, it would be the custom ringtone and text tones.

If this is not fixed I will have no choice than to switch to Samsung or google. I absolutely need to use custom text tones for my work and have already had this costing me jobs.

Please fix this. Already shopping for other options. I literally can’t afford not to have my text tones.

i don’t know why your’s are still there. Apple have had to refund £6 this week as I bought 6 text alert tones from iTunes and they went straight into the ringtone section. The only alert tones showing now on both my iPhone 14Plus, and my iPad all running on 17.3 are the ones that come included with the phone.

i had a specific tone for my text alert! I want it back! Now apple has released three updates to ios17 and they still haven’t fixed the problem. Get on it apple! This is my phone, and I want it to work for me, not you! Get on it!

I think not doing updates is not a wise approach to any problem with any software, device, or OS. Security is the key here, and these days it's more criticle than ever. The sophistication of cyber threats has developed into a formadable problem, our best chance to mitigate the threats is to always keep stuff up to date. Our dependence on our devices in our everydays lives also makes a good argument for updates. I don't know what happened at Apple, if it was intentional or an oops. If it was intentional to get us to purchase tones from them, that would be a decision that will cost them. I'm kind of a poster child for Apple just because those tactics are unchactoristic of them. I "want" to beleive it will be fixed as long as people tell them by means indicated in this thread.

I just noticed when I tried to change my custom tune to another and it completely removed it and only showed the stock sounds. I hope they fix this issue real soon. I don’t do a lot of customization to my phone which is why I went to apple years ago but I do like to have different tunes. Had I known this was going to be an issue I might not have bought the 15 max pro and went to droid.

You seem to know how to re-add a custom text tone to a particular contact and even better, add the custom tone into the list to pick. I have one particular custom text tone i mistakenly deleted from one contact. Can you help me with this ONE CUSTOM TEXT TONE for my iphone 15pro? I would add it here .. it is a m4r file (i made it as a m4a file and changed the "a" to an "r" and added to my itunes on my imac with the iphone connected and it worked before upgrading to ios 17.

the custom text tone is called "DAVID BOWIE-ANDY WARHOL.....

I very much agree this option needs to replaced or the one apple product I have and will ever own goes by the way of the bin . Just more proof that apple products are way over priced and under developed!!! Give us back our right to choose what tone we use for texts, incoming and outgoing emails voicemails and other alerts . Fix it now !!

I don’t understand why people are moaning so much about this. It’s obviously an error by Apple which I’m sure will be resolved soon in an update. There are worse things happening in the world than missing custom tones (for information mine have disappeared as well).
