Custom tones dissapeared after iOS 17 update

Has anyone noticed that after the update to IOS 17, the ability to have custom text or notification tones have disappeared?

I am not bothered about the stock tones by Apple, and loved having the option to have custom tones. This seems a step backwards for users

Yes, me too. My painstakingly hand made ringtones are still available to assign as ringtones, but not as text tones.
With the contacts who had previously been assigned custom text tones I still have the option to select the custom ones (haven’t tried to change one yet because I don’t want to lose the option) but if a contact does not currently have a custom text tone assigned the only options are the Apple ones.

You need to update to iOS 17.1. The problem ha been resolved.

same I had my custom text tones in every version of iOS 16 but as soon as I updated to iOS 17 bang gone and like many others I can still have custom ringtones but no longer text tones I can now see why my brother-in-law doesn’t like updating his phone or MacBook my brother-in-law has the same iPhone 13 mini as me (just in a different colour) and he is still using iOS 15 on his phone until they rectify the problem with the custom text and other alert tones in iOS 17 I would do anything to go back to iOS 16 just to have my custom text and other alert tones back

That is not supported. You can submit feedback to Apple here:

Meanwhile, you may want to start your own thread about your keyboard problem. Apparently, your punctuation keys are not working. Which is unfortunate as it makes your post hard to read.

The apple text tones are all terrible. I had custom ringtones for text messages, which I paid for through iTunes. They are all gone from ios17 except as ringtones. Downloading purchased tone doe nothing. Who calls? Everyone texts! There are other problems but custom text tones deleted is at the very top of my list. I wish I had never purchased a new phone. I am angry that Apple is dictating how I can use my phone to receive texts messages.

True, but when I purchased my iPhone 13 Pro, it came with iOS 15, and the custom text tone feature worked. At the time of purchase, there was no indication that two years, later custom text tones would be broken, albeit most likely temporarily.

Additionally, as others have mentioned previously, what about those individuals who rely on custom tones for accessibility issues?

Mcoopers07,

I did exactly what you had done. Relentlessly keep purchasing ringtones, I finally found one ringtones “ song “ in my native language to set as a default ONLY to IMessage to a new IPhone 15 Pro Max. however, If assigned this only by my luck to ringtones to specific name on my contact listing, If I would have automatically set to a default to IMessage for all.

I can guaranteed, I won’t mess with this uneventful and mind-boggling issue for months, until the problem is resolved…

Hello ~ First of all this isn’t about me personally and I am probably more affected by this than most because I count on them having accessibility problems myself. Remember…we are all in the same boat and being rude which the TOU you agreed to discourages does nothing to help. Apple will either fix it or not. That’s pretty simple. As a business model they would sell more ringtones if they fixed it. Second of all I volunteer here every single day to try and help someone and will continue to do so. This issue will pass and another will take it’s place…such is life. Just wait to see if this is remedied like everyone else. Take care.

The removal of the ability to assign custom sounds and tones to one’s own alerts and reminders is utter tosh, especially as it would seem it’s being done solely to sell things I didn’t want to purchase in the first place. I’m one of those unusual individuals who really likes the sounds and noises my devices make, and change my complete alert-tone profile with the seasons and with holidays I celebrate. Now, just to sell me ring tones and alert tones, Apple has apparently taken away my freedom to choose these things from my own library of already purchased musical and aural content and I can only buy from their own limited store which has *nothing* like the content I’d already purchased and had been using. Tosh, I tell you. I already give Apple enough of my $$$, being an Apple One Premier member and buying top-tier devices to upgrade to annually. All signs currently point to Apple taking away something that makes me happy just to make more money.
