Custom tones dissapeared after iOS 17 update

Has anyone noticed that after the update to IOS 17, the ability to have custom text or notification tones have disappeared?

I am not bothered about the stock tones by Apple, and loved having the option to have custom tones. This seems a step backwards for users

Yes, me too. My painstakingly hand made ringtones are still available to assign as ringtones, but not as text tones.
With the contacts who had previously been assigned custom text tones I still have the option to select the custom ones (haven’t tried to change one yet because I don’t want to lose the option) but if a contact does not currently have a custom text tone assigned the only options are the Apple ones.

You need to update to iOS 17.1. The problem ha been resolved.

I sincerely apologize I was not trying to make anyone feel like I was telling them what to do it was just a general populating phrase. I’m sorry if you were offended. Please take care. I was only meaning to be positive with this situation and site due to people being upset.

Apology accepted. Just be mindful of who you're replying to when you post a reply. Simply replying to the last thread in the post may result in unintended consequences.

And, honestly, people have a right to be upset. As long as they express it in a civil manner, that's okay.

Things look good here with iOS 17.1.

Out of curiosity, for those who didn’t apply the Ringtones.plist “fix” for iOS 17.0.3, do you now see (with iOS 17.1) that both your ringtones and text/notification tones are listed intermingled in the selection menus, or do you see only ringtones or text/notification tones listed contextually?

I don't exctly know what you mean by "contextually". Alert tones a listed under "Alert Tones" and ringtones are listed under "Ring tones" when you go to choose a text tone for an individual contact. "Alert tones" are not a listed option when you select a ring tone for an individual contact.

I've noticed the same thing on my iPhone 13. I'm not able to access any of my custom-made Text Ringtones I've previously made when I attempt to assign one to one of my contacts, they just don't appear in the Text Tone listings. Is this a bug with the new iOS 17? I'm hoping Apple will correct this at some point since I really want to have distinct ringtones that I've created for both phone Ringtone & a different Text Ringtone, this way I know just from the Ringtone who's contacting me. Keeping my fingers crossed Apple will fix this.

Learn? Not so much learned, as impressed with the support Apple provides. I have said I'm a "poster child" for Apple with my friends, I still am for sure now. Also, I suppose I learned to make use of the Feedback system as a resource to report a problem that will get escalated if appropriate. I rarely use any support as I am a old IT guy that knows how to get answers to questions without having to leverage the support that Apple so gracefully provides. In this case, I simply felt it was a good move as it was a new, and unresolved issue. I was confident it would be resolved barring a possible security issue it might be to go further. Oh yeah, I love the stance Apple takes on that too.

Hello ~ Perhaps you should take that up with Apple. I myself reported it and other issues as well via the feedback form but called and was told they were aware. The customer service representatives may not be aware of how and when or better still if an issue will be addressed. I don’t know of any other company that would let me in on their plans. I much prefer my device an Apple one versus other choices. This issue was inconvenient but I at least have some confidence in security…which matters more to me than anything else. Seeking perfection… a folly but we are off and down the rabbit hole.

Acknowledging that a problem has been “officially” identified and will be addressed in a software update isn’t “letting you in on their plans.” It’s simply being both professional and honest about problems as they are detected.

Case in point: with the medical equipment that I administrate, I frequently receive service bulletins detailing known issues, work-around, approximately when patches will be issued, and so on. That’s not “disclosing future plans.” Rather, it’s keeping valued customers informed about the functionality of systems that they (and their patients) rely upon.

Hello again ~ We are discussing a moot point. How would Apple let you know personally? They let me know because I called and asked them. I have an implanted medical device and I have never been contacted by the company that made it but I instead contact them should the need arise…I don’t take it personally and I spent considerably more than the purchase price of an iPhone. Do you think the company that made my medical device would actually disclose an issue to me. I think not. We just have to agree to disagree and the issue is resolved now so…on to the next world shaker. Take care.

And it's also never the way Apple has conducted business. And, to the best of my knowledge, neither does Microsoft, Google, or any other major software company. You can agree or disagree, but expecting them to suddenly change decades of behavior seems unrealistic.

So essentially what you’re saying is that when a customer files a bug report, it’s acceptable for the company to not even acknowledge the receipt of that report, let alone advise the customer that the issue is being addressed?

I didn't express an opinion on whether or not it was acceptable. I only pointed out that big companies don't generally do this, and expecting that they would suddenly start doing so will just lead to disappointment.
