Has anyone noticed that after the update to IOS 17, the ability to have custom text or notification tones have disappeared?
I am not bothered about the stock tones by Apple, and loved having the option to have custom tones. This seems a step backwards for users

With the contacts who had previously been assigned custom text tones I still have the option to select the custom ones (haven’t tried to change one yet because I don’t want to lose the option) but if a contact does not currently have a custom text tone assigned the only options are the Apple ones.
You need to update to iOS 17.1. The problem ha been resolved.

If an Android is a better option for you, then by all means get an Android. We're just users on this user to user only forum, so what phone you choose is your business.
That's my plan. I bought mine for one specific thing and I no longer need it. My deal is up in Jan. with T Mobile and I'm tossing it in the trash nd buying an android. They fixed the default tone but it will just be something else with the next update.

There was a time when I had a box of about twenty Samsung phones of the model that was having the explosion problem sitting in a box next to my desk because we weren't allowed to ship them back because a safe procedure hadn't yet been devised. That certainly added some spice to my life.
The text tone I had previously is no longer found on text setting. But it is found on phone settings.

What would be their reason to decrease volume? I am partially deaf and relied on the volume up/down to be able to hear sound. Apple is making it extremely difficult for users to want to keep their phones. Wonder how many people jump ship b/c of this??

Again, we aren't apple and we can't speak for them. I'd guess not many are jumping ship, when their sales keep going up and they have recently broken the $3Trillion cap.
There are Forum Hosts who do monitor these forums for adherence to the Terms of Use all users agreed to. The folks at Apple you'd hope, like engineers, etc., DO NOT. Posting here with the hope it gets anyone's attention at Apple is not going to happen.
Took me a while to understand the changes. The tone I previously used (By The Seaside) for texts, can be used for my phone ringtone. Every time my Phone rings, I think it's an incoming text. If anyone knows the REASON for this aggravating change, please post it so everyone else will know.
Same thing has happened to me. I’ve purchased several tones over the years. After this update they disappeared. I nearly missed work this week. The tone I had set for my alarm. Wasn’t there and set to none.
What a pain. My fiancé had a different text sound and after the update last night it went back to the default. You know when a business is going down the hill when simple mistakes like this leaves millions of customers frustrated. Congratulations Apple, you win a trophy 🏆 for pretending to advance your technology only to go backwards!
I’ve just been googling this very thing - I had a Bark alert as my text and ring tone to set it apart for specific urgent texts and now I can only have it as a ring tone. But this particular emergency only comes through as a text so I often miss it. I’ve noticed it for over 6 months so not sure it’s the most recent upgrade that caused it. Have you found solution? I would happily buy it but you can’t buy the ring tone Bark alert, only silly woofy noises!!
I’ve been researching Samsung phones. Might have to buy another phone rather than being stuck with text tones I can’t hear. Being partially deaf, I can’t hear “ping” sounds or any of the others. I’ve gone through every one of them. Don’t like any of them. The text tone I did have is now on phone sounds. I’m so used to hearing that sound as a text and don’t have to read it immediately. But it’s actually my phone ringing

You are free to purchase or make your own tones. Even buying half a dozen tones to experiment would be cheaper than buying a new phone.
I didn't find anything on the tone store that I liked. I purchased one as the choices I was given didn't suit me. I'm 73-years-old and have a difficult time keeping up with all the changes Apple makes. Very frustrating.
