I was finally forced to buy a new machine with a new OS. Anyone have any idea what printer driver I can use for keep my trusty old Samsung 1710 working? The original driver is too old to even be allowed to be installed onto this machine. Please tell me how I can keep this great 20+ year old machine out of the dump! It still works great!

I just followed the instruction for my ML-1740 old Samsung printer (simply replace 1510 with 1740 in the sample commands).
I found the solution for my Samsung ml 1710 for os Monteray. They won't let me post a link so just google
github Old-Samsung-Printer-Splix-Catalina and after you finish go to the issues tab to fix the permissions.
