Updated to iOS 17, just to find out that my custom text tones are no longer appearing/usable. Works fine for ringtones, but not text messages. I have different tones set for my most frequent people, so it’s irritating that they’ve all gone to default ‘ding’ sound.
Fun fact, I just talked to Apple and they said basically “you got lucky” because the “tones” i purchased and used were actually ringtones and should’ve never been used as text tones.
Do you have links to documentation on the fact you can no longer use custom tones for text tones? I don't recall hearing about this before. Would love to be able to direct people to a source.
Note that these custom tones are already on my phone.
It's just something we noticed in the testing from June until now in the software that we cannot mention. I have long advocated that documentation should be released in June with the you-know-what software, but this change is probably never going to appear.
It was also noted that text tones are "smoother and quieter" by one of the test team and presumably remastered - maybe the tone sellers need to catch up and update them like any other "app". Maybe they are not even .m4r any more - who knows!
Re side loading DIY .m4r tones, it was only something I learned from TT2, not sure that was ever documented.

Only special people get special tones. They are carefully selected to make me think of that person. Admittedly, having an Apple Watch has caused me to rely on them less. Now, if only Apple would do custom tones on the Watch.....
My issue is a bit different but could be related. My text ringtone is different from the one I have selected in settings. I just use the default (from ios 16), but for some reason, it's playing something that I haven't heard before. When I go into settings, the default ringtone is selected. There's definitely some bugginess going
I’m not happy that my custom text tones disappeared after the update! I rely on hearing those to know whose text it is! Now I just got 2 that work and the rest don’t!! That’s crazy- fix it! I don’t feel like buying more tones from apple when I already had my text alerts. I have to say that android phones have good tones to use !!

It’s very annoying. I as well had certain tones for my husband kids. Sisiters mom. Etc and I went to turn on emergency bypass for my husband and his text tone is now gone I’m so mad cuz I’m ocd about my ringtones and text tones. For some reason my brain don’t register the other tones as a message and I need to read it my brain ignores it. I’m furious at this point. Ready to leave iphone
Me either my brain ignores those text tones don’t register to me that I have a new message and look at ur phone at least when I heard certain song as a text I knew who it was and would look at it. 😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬😡😡😡 very upset this changed.
What a stupid response from such a big company! The phone should be able to do everything better- not take away items that so many people rely on. In my business I need to hear who is texting so I don’t interrupt what I’m doing. I hope they fix this before I buy an android, which by the way, has a lot of various text tones!
Custom Text Tones can still be added as the default tone by using GarageBand.
Top sound page shows the custom name but the next page shows "None".
Change to generic tone and the custom tone disappears and you have to go back to GarageBand.
I’m having this same exact problem! Even my old text tone I had is now only in ringtones. And one I just got that even says is for messages… only shows up in full ringtones. Please fix this someone !??

OK lots of people break their NDA all over the internet but when Apple Pay the rent they will enforce Apple NDA’s here.

MacRumors and Apple Insider won't incur any bad publicity or lose revenue if the beta software is not released when they speculated it would be or if it fails to deliver what they said it would.
