Having myself updated several devices to iPadOS 17, I've not been able to replicate your issue.

If your iPad is not operating as expected after performing a system software update, try a forced-restart of your iPad - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

For the benefit of other readers who may encounter your post while looking for information, Dynamic volume controls were introduced with release of iPadOS 15.4 onwards. The “logic” behind dynamic volume controls is such that regardless of the screen orientation, the relative function remains constant - as follows:

  • When the physical buttons are positioned on a vertical edge of the iPad, the uppermost button will always increase the volume. Conversely, lower button will decrease the volume.

  • When the physical buttons are positioned on a horizontal edge of then iPad, the button on the right will increase the volume - while the button on the left will decrease the volume.

For reasons known only to Apple, the ability to disable this feature is not available for any new models of iPad and iPad Pro that have since been launched - these models being:

  • iPad Air5
  • iPad mini6
  • fourth generation iPad Pro 11”
  • sixth generation iPad Pro 12.9”
  • iPad10

This is documented within this updated Apple Support document:

Leave it to Apple to decide what is best for us. I just got my new iPad 11 Gen. 4 and this SUCKS!! Why they can't let users of new iPad's make our own decisions is beyond me. I sure hope you introduce an fix in a software update that brings back our ability to do what we want and not dictate what they want, especially when the change defeats a previous capability that allows the user to have what works best for us. Apple does NOT always know what's best for the customer.

FYI, my Full Keyboard Access is turned off and it doesn't change the locked dynamic volume buttons.

I already did do a restart. Whether the setting is on or off. No matter what orientation the iPad is in the volume button does not change which one turns it up or down. It’s always the one closest to the sleep button that turns it up. It worked before the update.

i am having the same issue with my ipad pro 12.9 6th generation.

have contacted apple support and was suggested to reset my ipad as a new devise to see if the issue occurs or not.

i have reset it and set it up as a new devise and the issue did not resolve.

i now reset my ipad again and restore it from backup, applied the latest ipados 17 update, the problem did not solved.

apple support told me that the volume button orientation setting is fixed to ON with some ipad models including mine, and the setting won’t appear on screen anymore after ipados 17.

this means the setting is always ON, but the function is not working with some ipad models.

Both my wife and I are having this same issue with our iPhone 14 pro max’s.

her phone updated to 17.0.2 last night. Initially when changing volume with the side buttons the bar visually goes down but then pop ls back up to full again. A reboot cleared that but volume is unaffected by the buttons on the side.

If we use the side switch to set it to silent, that works.

With 17.1 today the dynamic volume control issue is now finally fixed! But now it looks like the crazy loud iMessage alert issue is back on my iphone after being connected to a homepod….cripes…..solve one problem and bring back another… 🙄

Updated my iPhone 14 Pro Max to 17.1, this issue is still present.

if I use the volume controls and turn the volume right down, phone sounds are h affected: I can still hear the keyboard click.

I will update my iPad Pro and update this thread.

The keyboard option is off.

Yea I should not have combined 2 completely different items in my comment. The dynamic volume button control issue is fixed on the ipad air 5. The very loud text alert issue on my iphone 14 pro is back though… this is totally unrelated to the dynamic volume control bug on certain ipads. So for me 1 ipad issue was solved this week and another iphone issue was brought back 🙄
