I’m new to this so forgive me in advance. AudioBooks claims if you purchase an audio book on Amazon that you can use their app for free to listen. However, AudioBooks wants a monthly subscription in order for me to listen to it? Am I missing something? Does Apple Books charge a monthly subscription as well?

How do I purchase an audible book from Apple?
Apple does not offer a subscription service for audiobooks or for ebooks sold by Apple.
If you purchase an audiobook or an ebook from Apple, you get charged once, and have access to it for the foreseeable future.
Same for the free book downloads from Apple, and for the free downloads sourced from Project Gutenberg or such.
You can acquire subscription services from other sources, though those usually (always?) come with their own apps for viewing the subscribed content.

Apple sells audiobooks in the Apple Book Store, accessible within the Books app.
If you are referring to the Audible Books service, you’ll need to use that service and that app to acquire audiobooks.
Does Apple Books charge a monthly fee subscription?
