Merged Voicemails after IOS 17 Update

My wife and I share an Apple ID but have different cell phone numbers. We both have iPhone 14 Pro Max.

When I updated to iOS 17, yesterday, I lost all ability to make changes on the Apple ID (the picture got grayed out in Settings). Can't even enter it.

When she upgraded to iOS 17, today, our voice mail gots merged. When someone leaves a VM on her phone, it shows up on mine. Same as leaving a VM on mine, it shows up in hers. When I delete a VM on my phone, it gets deleted on hers and vice-versa.

How do we need to change to get back to separate voice mails? Please help.

The issues were two fold and resolved in a Genius Bar session.

  1. The grayed out Apple ID was caused by me turning on Content & Privacy Restrictions, Not Allowing Passcode Changes and Account Changes, and putting in a different 4-Digit Passcode. Once, I turned it off, the Apple ID under Settings, stopped being grayed out and it was back to normal. BTW, the reason I put I put in this 4-digit passcode is because of this report from WSJ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCfb9Wizq9Q;
  2. The only way out of the merge voice mail (calls, photos, etc.) is to create a different Apple ID and do Family Sharing.

Thanks for your help!

Yes, it happened with the iOS 17 upgrade, because Recent Calls and Voicemails were moved to iCloud. And it will most likely be that way forever more. See the post from elongfellow above for a solution that might work.

You do realize that your employer “owns” all content on your work phone, so if you use your personal Apple ID on that phone then all of your personal content is accessible and controlled by your employer.

i went and checked and my FaceTime on iCloud isn’t turned on and while our voicemails aren’t sharing anymore but our call logs still are which is crazy. Such a pain.

and before someone tells me to stop sharing ID…. I get it but I guess we just aren’t that tech savvy because a couple months ago when getting the bark app when setting it up we were having issues so I created my own ID and signed out of my hubbys which we used all these years. Once I did that his phone stopped working right with apps, contacts etc so he was forced to login under my Apple ID or I have to use his. We aren’t able to separate because they stop working right then.

Thanks for documenting the steps to un-share an Apple-ID!  Unfortunately, using separate A-IDs with Family Sharing doesn't support sharing/syncing many of the things that a shared A-ID has supported for us for many years - until iOS 17.

Our use case. To makes our lives easier, my wife and I (no other family members involved) WANT to share/sync EVERYTHING except those things that are intended for a specific individual - e-mails, texts, voice/video calls, voice-mails, Health.  I have to believe there is a large user base for this use case. (I’ll suggest this to Apple.)

Yes, we will comply with Apple’s “no-shared-A-ID“ design and will implement Family Sharing.  But, we’d still like to share/sync Photos, Calendars, Contacts, Notes, Reminders, Books, Home, and Find My.  Are there steps/tips that describe each of these? (I’ll also ask Apple.)

Yes it’s so annoying people assuming that what works for them works for everyone. Our point is the system doesn’t work for us anymore and it’s an excessive amount of people with the exact same 1 complaint. If that’s not your complaint then why are you here. It’s a simple fix. We should be able to keep it the way it was if that’s what we choose. Children, families or business needs. We had it working for us. Respect that.

Thanks for documenting the steps to un-share an Apple-ID!  We will use them to unwind our shared A-ID situation.

But, your comment "Contacts, Calendars, Notes, and Reminders sync to email accounts, so if you are logged in you will still have all of them. You will also still have all photos." does not seem to address SHARING that same information with other A-IDs, which is probably why most of us started sharing A-IDs in the first place.

Unfortunately, using separate A-IDs with Family Sharing doesn't appear to support sharing plus syncing many of the things that a shared A-ID has done for us for many years.  Until iOS 17.

I suspect our use-case is fairly common.  To makes our lives easier, my wife and I (no other family members involved) WANT to share+sync EVERYTHING except those things that are intended for a specific individual - e-mails, texts, voice/video calls, voice-mails, Health.

And, yes, I’ll also provide my feedback to Apple and ask them about the above.

As I said, if the devices with separate Apple IDs log in to the same email accounts they were logged into before the split you will still have all the Contacts, Calendars, Notes, and Reminders on all devices, and those items will still sync to all devices as they are updated. For photos you will have to enable a Shared photo folder on each device; but this gives you the flexibility to NOT share some photos if you so choose.

See the following support articles, which may address some of the things you'd like to share:

Share iCloud calendars on iPhone - Apple Support

For Find My, you can add anyone you want as a friend and see their location, just like you could do if they are a device tied to your Apple ID. You just look in a different place in the Find My app.

Using Family Sharing the books app would be accessible, so books would be available to whomever you choose in your family share plan.

For contacts, if you have a Mac, you can see different Apple IDs and share that way or you can simply use air drop to drop contacts between anyone you wan to share or receive contacts from.

Hey everyone I know there is frustration. I CALLED APPLE and this fix was direct from help chat and worked. It's several things in one so go step by step. My problem-similar to others-I have been sharing my apple id with my wife for at least 15 years (Iphone 2). It turns out apple has a fix that doesn't force me or the folks that need a business voice mail vs a personal voicemail to change how we do things. This worked/immediately. I believe apple does understand the need for one voicemail per one telephony number......it just makes sense. Hope this helps. Please copy to other forums.

That's nice, but it actually DOESN'T work. Many here have tried this and the merged call lists return soon after. One person said it stopped voicemail messages from displaying on both phones. But I doubt that's a long term result. The Apple Support person didn't give you the ONLY solution which will stop this, which is to NOT share an Apple ID.

Please come back in a few days and let us know if the Merged Call logs are no longer merged. I'm willing to be they will still be merged. And I know this because I tried to help some dear friends who refuse to stop sharing an Apple ID and I did all these things on their iPhones and it simply didn't work.

First of all, most people already know not to have message numbers checked on both phones. But then that doesn't prevent anyone from unchanging that and reading each others message without the other person knows. Handoff was not enabled on their phones. Again, most people who share an Apple ID already know about the same setting for FaceTime, just like they did for messages.
