Merged Voicemails after IOS 17 Update

My wife and I share an Apple ID but have different cell phone numbers. We both have iPhone 14 Pro Max.

When I updated to iOS 17, yesterday, I lost all ability to make changes on the Apple ID (the picture got grayed out in Settings). Can't even enter it.

When she upgraded to iOS 17, today, our voice mail gots merged. When someone leaves a VM on her phone, it shows up on mine. Same as leaving a VM on mine, it shows up in hers. When I delete a VM on my phone, it gets deleted on hers and vice-versa.

How do we need to change to get back to separate voice mails? Please help.

The issues were two fold and resolved in a Genius Bar session.

  1. The grayed out Apple ID was caused by me turning on Content & Privacy Restrictions, Not Allowing Passcode Changes and Account Changes, and putting in a different 4-Digit Passcode. Once, I turned it off, the Apple ID under Settings, stopped being grayed out and it was back to normal. BTW, the reason I put I put in this 4-digit passcode is because of this report from WSJ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCfb9Wizq9Q;
  2. The only way out of the merge voice mail (calls, photos, etc.) is to create a different Apple ID and do Family Sharing.

Thanks for your help!

There is NO solution except to STOP sharing an Apple ID.

Choose who between you will be the primary account holder, then creat a new Apple ID under the family plan.

It took some time to sort through which voice mails were mine and which was my wife’s on both of our individual phones.

After we stopped sharing Apple IDs, no more merged voice mails. My voice mails are mine; my wife’s, hers.

No. You'll completely erase her iPhone and set it up as a new iPhone creating a new Apple ID for her. Then you'll set up Family Sharing, so the apps you've both been using and photos, storage, etc., can be shared to her new Apple ID.

This link explains how to wipe the phone back to out of the box new status --> What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

See this link about Family Sharing --> Family Sharing - Apple

This won't be fun and it will take time, but once done, your calls, messages, voicemail will be completely separated.

Here is the whole procedure:

  • If you don’t have a recent backup, create one on your computer or in iCloud (just for security, you probably won’t need it)→How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
  • Go to Settings/[apple ID name] and tap Sign Out
  • If you sync to iCloud you will be asked if you want to keep the content that syncs; say yes
  • Tap to create a new Apple ID
  • If you sync to iCloud, go to Settings/Apple ID name]/iCloud and turn on the switches for items you want to sync.
  • Log in to the same email accounts you had on the shared Apple ID if they have logged out (they probably did not, unless one of them was an iCloud email address)

Contacts, Calendars, Notes, and Reminders sync to email accounts, so if you are logged in you will still have all of them. You will also still have all photos.

Next, decide who will be the family “organizer” and have that person set up Family Sharing→Set up Family Sharing - Apple Support

You can share all previous and future purchases; here is more information on that→Share with your family - Apple Support

My wife and I have the same problem and we have different carriers! This is on Apple 100% and is a huge problem for us. Come on Apple, FIX IT!

No one has suggested this is on anyone but Apple. But it's really on YOU, because you and your wife share the same Apple ID. Apple has never suggested that's a good thing to do and even has a support document explaining why each family member needs their own unique Apple ID --> Make sure that each family member has a unique Apple ID - Apple Support

The carrier has nothing to do with this.

Also, you must be under the impression you are writing anyone from Apple here? You're not. This is a user to user only forum, which Apple doesn't monitor for feedback. You can provide feedback here --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Many have used the link and many have contacted Apple directly and Apple doesn't see this as an issue, so waiting for them to fix what they don't see as an issue, for people who have ignored their advice isn't likely going to get you much.

The ONLY fix is to stop sharing the same Apple ID. Or accept merged call logs. Your choice.

Super late to the party here, but I would like to make a couple of comments. First, who told Apple that they own the right to my calls, messages and voicemails made on my phone that I purchased, on a carrier that I am paying for and that they don’t own either. Way out of line. Second, Apple just recently started this practice with IOS 16, there were no issues before that. I had Simeón at Apple fix this issue for me before. Now I have updated again and got screwed again. I might be forced to switch to Android.

Point of correction. Apple doesn't own your calls. Nor do they track them. Apple doesn't own your voicemail messages. Nor do they track or listen to them. Apple owns iOS and they can do whatever they want with iOS and as far as Apple is concerned, the fact you share the same Apple ID with yourself or someone else, means data is shared among all devices using the same Apple ID. This is your choice if you share an Apple ID with someone. Apple didn't encourage you to share an Apple ID. In fact, for more than a decade, Apple has strongly discouraged sharing an Apple ID. Your choice of course, but if you continue to share an Apple ID, your data will be accessible on all devices using the same Apple ID. That's on you, NOT Apple.

I'd recommend you read this link from Apple itself --> Make sure that each family member has a unique Apple ID - Apple Support

Clearly, Apple doesn't agree with you as long as you use the same Apple ID on more than one iPhone, both phones are seen as one to Apple.

See this link from Apple about why each person needs their own unique Apple ID --> Make sure that each family member has a unique Apple ID - Apple Support

You don't have to follow Apple's guidance on this. But you're going to see merged calls and voicemail message on each iPhone using the same Apple ID.

It's your choice of course, but you need to either separate the phones from the same Apple ID, or accept merged calls/voicemail.

You can use Family Sharing, to share content such as Apps, Photos, Storage, etc. --> Family Sharing - Apple

And don't shoot the messenger here. No one here on this user to user only forum has anything to do with Apple. We are ALL users here, like you. Disagreeing with anyone here is pointless. We don't have any influence with Apple or how Apple has chosen to implement anything.

If you want to tell Apple what should be, you can use this link --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Is there any way to fix this problem without wiping everything off all but one phone on the apple ID? My family is all on the same apple ID. We've always been, and have never had an issue until this latest update. I don't see why we should have to wipe everything off all but one phone and start over when it's clearly a problem with the latest update.

You have three options:

  1. Accept merged phone call logs and voicemail messages on all iPhones using the same Apple ID - OR
  2. Wipe one of the phones and assign it its own unique Apple ID, then use Family Sharing to share content between the phones
  3. Send feedback to Apple via this link --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple - with the hopes Apple may reverse this, but its honestly MOST unlikely Apple will change this, because its working as Apple intends it to work (regardless of whether you had this in a previous iOS version or not).

Apple simply does NOT recommend the sharing of Apple IDs.

After spending four hours chatting and then talking to ATT with no solution, I called my local ATT Store and chatted with a worker there. After spending some time thinking about it, she suggested both phones turn off Live Voicemail (Under Phone in Settings). So far, I believe this did the trick. If it was that easy, I wasted five hours today online, and chatting, and calling. I really hope this is the solution.

They’re full of beans. We’ve had two phones on the same Apple ID for 10+ years and voicemails only started being “shared” when the second of the pair updated to 17. We’ve checked every setting we can think of to make it stop and have found nothing.

And you won't find any setting which will reverse this. Don't shoot the messenger here as no one from Apple is on this forum. Apple made a change in iOS 17, which now merges your call logs/voicemail. There is nothing you or anyone can do EXCEPT to stop sharing an Apple ID. That or accept merged calls.

For now, voice mails are going to the correct phone.

Last night I did two things. I'm not sure if one or the other would have worked on their own.

First, I removed Live Voicemail from both of our phones.

Second, on both phones I went to Messages > Send & Receive > then selected both our phone numbers on both phones. Then I restarted both phones and went back to Messages > Send & Receive > then deselected the phone number that did not belong to the phone. Then restarted both phones.

Working at the moment.

If you have two humans using different devices and sharing the same Apple ID, it is likely to be inconsistent and unreliable, usually without warning and when it will cause greatest embarrassment. The advice remains the same, create at least one new Apple ID and go with each human having their own personal ID. If sharing is required just use the Family Share function to link the two unique IDs.

Prior to the iOS 17 update, it was possible to share Apple IDs. For whatever reason Apple had, now voice mails, call histories, contacts, wallet, (anything else?) got merged if you share the same Apple ID.

It seems that the only way around it is to stop sharing Apple IDs. Designate a family organizer, create new distinct Apple IDs, and start Family Sharing.

Which is what KiltedTim has been saying throughout this thread. It has always been possible to share Apple IDs. Apple, to date, has not tried to prevent that. But, if other changes they make cause it to be more difficult, they're not going to "fix" it.
