AirPrint not working after iOS 17 Update

AirPrint was working on ios16 using a Canon printer connected to my home WiFi. I recently updated to ios17 and the printer shows up as an available printer but shortly disappears after selecting it. I am able to print on iPad os 16 and my MacBook Air on Ventura using AirPrint. I’ve reset network setting on both router iPhone and printer and I am still encountering same behavior. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix it or if it is a known bug in ios17? I’ve also restarted my phone and tested it on my partners iPhone which shows same behavior on ios17.

"Cannot AirPrint after updating to ios17 on iPhone: Issue was fixed after updating firmware on Canon printer under Menu -> System Management -> Update Firmware

Updates are what firmware is all about. To get something working as it should with a newer Operating System and to fix bugs, install firmware updates.

Excellent job troubleshooting!

@techguyuk - not sure this is fully the case (but can understand the logic of an older protocol version being dropped). I have a Samsung printer that still works via AirPrint from MacOS Sonoma so didn't stop working under Ventura, but it can't be found as a printer on iOS 17.x

Devices on iOS 16.x can still print to the Samsung printer fine which implies it's specific to the changes in iOS17 only. I also happen to have an Epson printer that still works fine on iOS16, iOS17 and MacOS Sonoma so agree there is printer specific element. Sadly my chances of getting a firmware update from HP would seem limited given they bought Samsung printer line and then immediately dropped support!

After 6 hours of trying, this solution worked: (note- I do not have any Norton anything anywhere)

equipment:

iPhone 14 pro max

iOS 17.0.3

HP laser jet pro all in one M277

here’s the steps I took: (I’m not a professional so maybe have more steps here than needed!)

  1. uninstall the hp printer and deleted all “remnant “ files on folders - on my dell lap top
  2. reboot printer and desktop
  3. Reinstall printer on desk top and a driver update called PCL 6. I also had one firmware update to installl.
  4. reboot laptop. Unplug printer for 60 seconds- then turn on again. Reboot my gateway (modem/router)
  5. reboot everything again!
  6. reset network settings on my iPhone.
  7. install HP Smart app on my phone.
  8. reboot my phone
  9. now when I go to print, I have an option to “print from HP Smart” or “print”
  10. Chose the HP Smart option. I can now print images from iPhone photos, webpages with images, and every thing else. It doesn’t work if I just hit “print”.

One more thing, I also enabled Wi-Fi Direct on my printer. I was not able to print by connecting to the wi fi direct network - and I’m not sure if this is how the smart HO app connects. All I know is that it works now!

The option to print from HP smart did not appear until I did all these things.

VPN frequently creates more problems than it solves. But one important fact is that when you install VPN it configures itself to the specific hardware, iOS version and network that the phone uses. If any of those change it can break the VPN. So any time you change any of these you may need to delete the VPN app and profile, restart your phone then add them back (if you still want to use VPN) so it can configure itself to the new environment.

And the reason you delete the app is so it thinks it’s “new”, so it will reconfigure the profile. The app isn’t causing the problem, the profile is (as you rightly pointed out), but the profile needs to be reprogrammed.

Lawrence, I wonder if the file format has anything to do with it because prior to 17 we could AirPrint HEIF from the photos app or opening a photo elsewhere. For many of us with iOS 17 we are able to use Airprint from every other application, but it has only been the photos app or printing photos from another application that is now not working and this seems to be the case where a firmware update is no longer available for the printer. It is still strange to me that 17 broke printing photos only for many of us while everything else can still be printed.
