AirPrint not working after iOS 17 Update

AirPrint was working on ios16 using a Canon printer connected to my home WiFi. I recently updated to ios17 and the printer shows up as an available printer but shortly disappears after selecting it. I am able to print on iPad os 16 and my MacBook Air on Ventura using AirPrint. I’ve reset network setting on both router iPhone and printer and I am still encountering same behavior. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix it or if it is a known bug in ios17? I’ve also restarted my phone and tested it on my partners iPhone which shows same behavior on ios17.

I have the same issue with Canon MF240 and no security software installed on my iPhone and iPad. Just updated to iOS 17.0.1 . The printer name shows up for a while and then disappears! I can print from my computer. I didn’t have this issue until before updating to iOS 17. Please fix this problem, it’s really annoying.

It's great that firmware updates are helpful to home users with personal printers. However, this is also an issue with Enterprise print systems. Users at my school who have upgraded to iOS 17 can print to our FujiXerox Docuprint copiers IF they use the proprietary FujiXerox app and if they enter the IP address of the copier. This implies that the printer itself is working and that waiting for a firmware update for our fleet of photocopiers isn't the best solution.

The more concerning issue to me is that when using AirPrint, users on iOS 17 are unable to discover the printers at all. To me, this seems like an issue with Bonjour discovery or the fundamental process of connecting to printers wirelessly.

These same users with iOS 17 are also unable to share their screens to the Apple TV in their classrooms via AIrPlay, which seems to be a related issue.

It should not be Canon's issue. It worked fine with iOS 16 and every version before that. I updated the firmware on the Canon, and it still did not work.

In addition, even though my HP OfficeJet 5745 still works, iOS tells me each time to "check the printer for errors". There are never any errors on the printer. Something is broken in iOS 17,

I had the same problem on my iPhone and iPad after upgrading to iOS 17 and I even had it before the official release cause I’m a beta user. So I have a canon printer and someone wrote under here to upgrade the firmware on the printer and that solved the problem on both my iPad and iphone. So hopefully that will fix your problem. I spent over an hour on the phone with Apple support having me do like 15 things and nothing worked and they never told me to upgrade the firmware on the printer 🙄. Next time I’ll just search on here lol.

I have two printers which are AirPrint enabled by a software.

hp Laserjet with synology AirPrint software. The Canon printer with a AirPrint software running on windows. With ios16 was all fine and both printers run fine.

wirh ios 17 the printers are visible but only empty pages are produced. A single page produce multiple empty one.

Im not very happy about this update and hope that ios 17.1 will fix it again.

all software bridges runs on the latest versions….

I assume you were running Ventura before your update? If that is the case you could revert to Ventura and update at a later date. I did this because I have some apps that didn’t run properly under Sonoma. If the HP ENVY PHOTO 7864 has a network port you could connect a network cable run it as a IP network printer, or alternatively buy a USB print server for bout $50 and set up the HP as a full network printer. Just some disjointed thoughts if they help.

Found this suggestion about VPN software very helpful, had a similar problem Airprinting to my Brother printer from iPhone with IOS 17.0.2 Had Norton’s VPN installed switching it Off solved my problem.

Now having just upgraded to IOS 17.1 I could not connect to the internet at all, again this was caused by the VPN. Which I had reinstated (idiot that I am) so uninstalled it altogether and straight away I could connect.

The moral of this story don’t use a proprietary VPN or at least only in exceptional circumstances or so I was told by an Apple tech.

No doubt someone will say different.

Are you experiencing this with an older HP Laser Jet? I have the exact issue, and can airprint from all other apps, but can't airprint any photo from photos app or even if the photo is saved outside of the photos app. I tried saving to files and opening from there and still could not print it. I print to an HP Color Laser Jet Pro 400 M451DN which has firmware from 2019. The printer blinks for a few seconds then nothing. I duplicated this on other Apple devices running iOS 17.1. I also tested to a new laser jet 4201DN and the photo printed fine.
