AirPrint not working after iOS 17 Update

AirPrint was working on ios16 using a Canon printer connected to my home WiFi. I recently updated to ios17 and the printer shows up as an available printer but shortly disappears after selecting it. I am able to print on iPad os 16 and my MacBook Air on Ventura using AirPrint. I’ve reset network setting on both router iPhone and printer and I am still encountering same behavior. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix it or if it is a known bug in ios17? I’ve also restarted my phone and tested it on my partners iPhone which shows same behavior on ios17.

I have the same issue with Canon MF240 and no security software installed on my iPhone and iPad. Just updated to iOS 17.0.1 . The printer name shows up for a while and then disappears! I can print from my computer. I didn’t have this issue until before updating to iOS 17. Please fix this problem, it’s really annoying.

Whether you get a solution to this problem depends on your printer manufacturer, Apple have dropped support for the earlier AirPrint protocols and many printers only worked by using that earlier iteration of the AirPrint protocol. This earlier AirPrint protocol was dropped from OS X Ventura and has not been reinstated. I have a number of printers, some continue to work with the appropriate firmware update, but some older printers are now regarded as legacy devices and are no longer supported and will not print using iOS 17 AirPrint protocols.

The first step in resolving this problem will be to contact your printer support desk to check on the firmware version that you have installed and whether there is an appropriate firmware update, if there is install it and you will probably have a fully functional printer. If there is no update available you won’t be able to AirPrint but the printer will still work using traditional IP addressing protocols. This will work fine with operating systems (OS X, MS, Linux) that allow IP addressing protocols to be configured but not for iPad and iPhone iOS devices which rely solely on AirPrint.

@techguyuk - not sure this is fully the case (but can understand the logic of an older protocol version being dropped). I have a Samsung printer that still works via AirPrint from MacOS Sonoma so didn't stop working under Ventura, but it can't be found as a printer on iOS 17.x

Devices on iOS 16.x can still print to the Samsung printer fine which implies it's specific to the changes in iOS17 only. I also happen to have an Epson printer that still works fine on iOS16, iOS17 and MacOS Sonoma so agree there is printer specific element. Sadly my chances of getting a firmware update from HP would seem limited given they bought Samsung printer line and then immediately dropped support!

I have a workaround for older Samsung printers , I have a SLM2835DW which will not connect in IOS 17 but works perfectly fine in IOS 16 , download Samsung Mobile Print from the App Store , then share / send your docs to the app, then print from within the Samsung Mobil Print app . It is odd that IOS 17 cannot see the printer but the Samsung app does . Even Direct Print although correctly set up on my iPad is not able to connect with IOS 17 , hopefully this bug will be sorted by Apple soon

JOoxon, I have an old Kyocera office printer, duplex, real workhorse prints 40ppm, can't get an upgrade from Kyocera that they guarantee will work, applying it may trash the printer. Can print using the old trad IP address method from laptops, desktops etc, but obviously won't AirPrint with iOS 17. Pain if you want to print a quick email or note from yr iPhone. If you figure out a solution to this, post it here, would be most grateful.

Does anyone know if the old Airport express devices will work with iOS 17?

Lates update WORKED! A little background, I’ve got an Epson and have been struggling with this problem ever since I downloaded IOS 17. Today I turned off the router, printer, Norton VPN and reentered SSID to no avail. Just installed the latest update and it WORKED! And amazingly enough, my Norton VPN recognizes my WiFi again so I don’t have to keep signing in to toggle it off!

Delaware,

reboot router, server, and any AirPrint devices, and printer

check AirPrint is enabled on printer

check VPN, Norton VPN is known to cause problems, disable VPN and check print status

check with Canon support desk if there is any known issues with this printer using iOS 17

did this printer work with iOS 16?

contact Apple support and raise a ticket
