AirPrint not working after iOS 17 Update

AirPrint was working on ios16 using a Canon printer connected to my home WiFi. I recently updated to ios17 and the printer shows up as an available printer but shortly disappears after selecting it. I am able to print on iPad os 16 and my MacBook Air on Ventura using AirPrint. I’ve reset network setting on both router iPhone and printer and I am still encountering same behavior. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix it or if it is a known bug in ios17? I’ve also restarted my phone and tested it on my partners iPhone which shows same behavior on ios17.

I have the same issue with Canon MF240 and no security software installed on my iPhone and iPad. Just updated to iOS 17.0.1 . The printer name shows up for a while and then disappears! I can print from my computer. I didn’t have this issue until before updating to iOS 17. Please fix this problem, it’s really annoying.

I had the same issue with my Canon MF240 series. I updated the Canon firmware using the keys and screen on the printer itself and now AirPrint works again! On the Canon ImageClass printer, hit the Menu key, then use the screen and navigation keys to select System Management Settings/Update Firmware. (It's the last item on a long drop-down menu). Success!

I can't print from my iphone after updating to iOS 17. I wish I hadn't. I have a Samsung printer that's no longer supported so I can't update firmware. I tried restarting everything (printer, phone, router) but that didn't work. I don't have VPN set up or antivirus on my phone. I can print from my macbook but this really inconvenient to not be able to print from my phone.

Has anyone with a Samsung printer found a solution? I'd rather not put my printer in a landfill. It worked fine with iOS 16. Apple, can you fix this please? I don't need the useless updates with iOS 17 (like "posters" for contacts.).

thanks,

My HP printer stopped working on the IOS 17! Thought it was the fault of the printer. I got a new HP printer but it didn’t work as well. It recognised the printer after I downloaded the HP App from the Apple Store, but I cannot print because it always shows the printer offline! It’s frustrating. Both the iPad, iMac and iPhone doesn’t recognise the printer.

Updates are what firmware is all about. To get something working as it should with a newer Operating System and to fix bugs, install firmware updates.

Excellent job troubleshooting!

The AirPrint facility on my iPhone 11 running iOS 17.01 is now accepting the printer, but when one prints it just says waiting and doesn’t print. On cancelling the print command the print screen cancels but won’t then one can’t remove the screen. It only removes on a reboot. This is definitely an Apple problem so it’s time they sorted it.

I posted this in another thread and a few folk found it useful, I have copied it here

I had the same issue with an Kyocera laser printer, old but very quick duplex office printer, worked perfectly under iOS 16, would be recognised in the printer dialogue by iOS 17, but then quickly disappeared and would not print. Would not take a firmware update.

As I understand it, the older printers had an earlier version of AirPrint (Bonjour) 1.2.1 (2003 - 2015) which it seems is no longer supported by Apple Inc. The current version (?) is 3.1.0.1 dated April 2018 as far as I can tell. Printers which support AirPrint 3.1.0.1 should work. Unless a firmware upgrade to 3.1.0.1 works for your printer, iOS 17 won’t AirPrint to your device. Check with your printer help desk what version of AirPrint they support.

I got around this by configuring an AirPrint (Bonjour) print server running cups Bonjour print services, this is open source, from Apple, (cost me $50) which connects via USB to the printer, only pulls 5 volts and solved my printing problem without having to buy a new expensive laser. Hope this helps.

SO after a lot of water time I found this comment - spot on. I deleted the Norton app on the iPad and now everything woks properly. If you're running Norton I'd try this first. Once they update I'll reinstall on my iPad.

Keep Security Software Off of Apple Devices:

All another read to why not to use Security Software on an Apple Device. Security Software just gets in the way, and this is a pure example of how and why. So, keep it off of your Apple devices.

How to Uninstall from and iPad:

Use the uninstaller to remove it from a computer, as just removing it from the trash would leave caches and shortcuts laying about your system files. As for a mobile device (ie this iPad), just hold you finger down on it in the Home Screen and remove it when it jiggles. Then, restart your iPad, having made a major change to your device. Know to always restart your device, after uninstall software and after installing updates so that all gets set to how it show be.

It’s not a matter of Apple not playing nice. Apple updated BonJour to fix a vulnerability, and printer manufacturers had to update their firmware to adapt; it’s the printer manufacturer who isn’t playing nice. If Apple hadn’t fixed BonJour your printer could have been hacked.

And note that most printers don’t have a problem; my HP, for example, was updated months before Apple fixed this problem.

Have you checked for a printer firmware update? You can usually do that from the printer’s control panel.
