AirPrint not working after iOS 17 Update

AirPrint was working on ios16 using a Canon printer connected to my home WiFi. I recently updated to ios17 and the printer shows up as an available printer but shortly disappears after selecting it. I am able to print on iPad os 16 and my MacBook Air on Ventura using AirPrint. I’ve reset network setting on both router iPhone and printer and I am still encountering same behavior. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix it or if it is a known bug in ios17? I’ve also restarted my phone and tested it on my partners iPhone which shows same behavior on ios17.

"Cannot AirPrint after updating to ios17 on iPhone: Issue was fixed after updating firmware on Canon printer under Menu -> System Management -> Update Firmware

Updates are what firmware is all about. To get something working as it should with a newer Operating System and to fix bugs, install firmware updates.

Excellent job troubleshooting!

I recently updated to ios17 and the printer shows up as an available printer but shortly disappears after selecting it. I was advised to restart router, wifi extenders, printers and iPad. This didn't really make sense as my Mac mini and phone both printed ok. SO after a lot of water time I found this comment - spot on. I deleted the Norton app on the iPad and now everything woks properly. If you're running Norton I'd try this first. Once they update I'll reinstall on my iPad.

the variety of affected printer brands shows that the issue is not dedicated to one brand. It relates to the age of the printer sided Airprint implementation. If you can‘t use Airprint with iOS17 on your printer: watch out for a firmware update for your printer. Canon had a 2021 firmware update which i never applied With the firmware update i can use Airprint again with iOS17

I had the same problem on my iPhone and iPad after upgrading to iOS 17 and I even had it before the official release cause I’m a beta user. So I have a canon printer and someone wrote under here to upgrade the firmware on the printer and that solved the problem on both my iPad and iphone. So hopefully that will fix your problem. I spent over an hour on the phone with Apple support having me do like 15 things and nothing worked and they never told me to upgrade the firmware on the printer 🙄. Next time I’ll just search on here lol.

Found this suggestion about VPN software very helpful, had a similar problem Airprinting to my Brother printer from iPhone with IOS 17.0.2 Had Norton’s VPN installed switching it Off solved my problem.

Now having just upgraded to IOS 17.1 I could not connect to the internet at all, again this was caused by the VPN. Which I had reinstated (idiot that I am) so uninstalled it altogether and straight away I could connect.

The moral of this story don’t use a proprietary VPN or at least only in exceptional circumstances or so I was told by an Apple tech.

No doubt someone will say different.

Delaware, first, see my post above, it is an iOS 17 issue, but only affects older printers.

Second check if your printer has up to date firmware, contact your printer help desk. If your printer only supports AirPrint (Bonjour) 1.2.1 (2003 - 2015) it won't ever print from IOS 17.

Apple are not supporting AirPrint (Bonjour) 1.2.1 any longer (as far as I can determine), therefore any printer with this firmware version will not AirPrint from iOS 17. Period.

Do the following, in this order:

  • If you have VPN installed, delete the VPN profile and app - If that doesn't fix it proceed with the next steps
  • power off the printer
  • Power off your iPhone
  • Restart your router by unplugging it for 15 seconds (many newer routers have no true power switch)
  • Turn on your iPhone
  • Connect the iPhone to the Wi-Fi network if it doesn’t automatically connect
  • Power on the printer and wait for it to connect to Wi-Fi

You should also check with the printer manufacturer for a software update for the printer.

These steps restart the BonJour network that supports AirPrint, and will usually resolve any AirPrint issues. You probably don’t need to do all of them, but following these steps is usually less work than finding the one that is causing the problem.

My printer is post 2018 and I had to update the firmware OTA in order to restore air printing on both my iPad and iPhone. MacBook was never affected. And until I updated the firmware, I would just air drop what I wanted to print to my MacBook. But like I said once I updated the firmware on my canon I just restarted the printer as a precaution and then I could resume air printing on my non MacBook devices. Also, the only additional advice I can give ppl is to ensure the printer and iPhone are on the same WiFi network. Like I can speak for myself and I have three - the main one, the 5G, and the network for my wifi extender. Sometimes it doesn’t matter, but usually when I make sure they are on then same one, I never have a problem.

As you probably missed these troubleshooting steps when you read through the 15 pages of this thread before you posted, do the following, in this order:

  • If you have VPN installed, delete the VPN profile and app - If that doesn't fix it proceed with the next steps
  • power off the printer
  • Power off your iPhone
  • Restart your router by unplugging it for 15 seconds (many newer routers have no true power switch)

If these steps don't work you should also check with the printer manufacturer for a firmware update for the printer. Apple has updated Bonjour to improve security, and the printer firmware may not be compatible with the latest Bonjour version until it is updated.

Patrick, excellent post,

The issue is totally an iOS issue and incompatible older printers, you can still print to those older printers from laptops and desktops using IP address printing. (see internet instructions on how to install an IP address printer on your OS device). Apple have removed support for earlier implementations of AirPrint (bonjour). As I understand it, the older printers had an earlier version of AirPrint (Bonjour) 1.2.1 (2003 - 2015) which it seems is no longer supported by Apple. The current version (?) is 3.1.0.1 dated April 2018 as far as I can tell. Printers which support AirPrint (bonjour) 3.1.0.1 should work. My older printer would not update firmware, I can still IP print from MacBook (Sonoma) and Mac mini (Catalina) but I had to use another solution to print from my iPad and iPhone running iOS 17.

As iOS devices rely totally on AirPrint bonjour (you cannot IP print from them natively) you might be able to print using a print manufacture's iOS application, HP and Canon iOS applications will still print as I understand it as they implement a version of IP printing imbedded within the application. (can someone advise on this).
