AirDrop is not working after new iOS 17 update

After updating both my phone and iPad to the iOS 17, my airdrop has been giving me problems. Although my iPad can airdrop to other people’s phone it cannot airdrop to my phone. And my phone does not pick up on my iPad nor any other devices. I am not able to airdrop something from my iPad if it’s from my phone. It also automatically declines when I try to airdrop something to my phone, or my phone won’t pick it up. I’ve tried everything that has been recommended on the internet but it doesn’t seem to help.

Hey, if your iPad is not cellular( and it is working ) then I can say it might be an issue with your iPhone, since this might be a network settings issue. For this I can suggest some fixes, you already said you did some troubleshooting however, I dont know which one you tried. So I will recommend these fixes

  • When Airdropping turn off cellular Data
  • Reboot your Iphone
  • Remove AirDrop Restrictions
  • Re-sign in to your iCloud
  • Try Reset Network Settings

I suggested these fixes from this guide, for detailed steps refer to it: 6 Ways to Fix Airdrop Not Working After IOS 17 Update , I hope after applying one of these fixes you won't face this issue.

I had the same problem on my wife's iPhone 15 Pro with iOS 17.3.

When airdropping from my MacBook Pro macOS 10.15.17 the transfer failed every single time.

I turned the mobile data off as suggested by @75Westy and it worked like a charm. 👍

It's also worth noting that transfers between my iPhone 12 iOS 17.3 and my Mac have been working just fine.

I was having the same problem on my iPhone 11 Pro Max (on iOS 17.4). My AirDrop suddenly switched to “Receiving Off” out of nowhere and I couldn’t change it; neither to “Contacts Only”, nor to “Everybody for 10 minutes”. I couldn’t fix it despite trying everything I found on Google, including reviewing my Screen time settings and checking AirDrop settings in the General Settings of iPhone in the Settings app.

But, I force restarted my iPhone (didn’t see it anywhere on Google - just clicked in my mind) and luckily it worked. My phone became super hot after restart, just for a while and has cooled down now, but the AirDrop is working fine now. I think it was some bug of the new iOS update.

Anyone else who is having this problem, please try and force restart your iPhone if other solutions on Google don’t work.

Thanks.

Hello everybody, I am back after I found a stupid but probably obviously solution when you talk about electronic devices.

In my last comment that I could not found [:D] I was talking that I have the same issue with my iPad and iPhone after both devices got iOS 17 AirDrop just stop working.

Well one day my iPhone got completely discharged at night. So next day in the morning I been forced to charge my iPhone.

Then I noticed that AirDrop just come back and work again.

Then I completely forgot that I leave a comment in this post; after maybe one month of use AirDrop with no problems.

I was trying to transfer some files between my iPhone and iPad then my laptop.

Then AirDrop just stop working again.

This time I took the decision to Turn OFF the iPhone and iPad.

Well, after restarting both devices AirDrop come back again, and I keep working normally.

Conclusion: Just Turn OFF and Turn ON the Apple device to fix AirDrop.

lol hehehe [^.^]

My Problem was Solved by Apple --> Here is How: I had a similar problem when AirDropping from an iPhone 11 to a MacBook Air M1 (not working after an iOS17 update), chatting with apple support and escalating to a Senior technical Level and after trying a few things which didn't work at all (Network Reset, VPN apps uninstalled, VPN configurations deleted, Force Hard Reset, Router and Internet device reset, AirDrop Off/On, Wifi Off/On, Bluetooth Off/On, Software Update, ScreenTime->Apps Allowed-> AirDrop Off/On), They found an app (DaVinci Resolve) that was configured in the native Mac Firewall that was creating the problem, so I just block the app in the firewall and it worked properly back again. The only thing that we didn't try (it was the last step) was backing up the phone and restore it to factory settings.

Hope this gives you one more clue on what to look at.

Thank you, that clue was all I needed: Firewall in Mac OS 14 was the problem all along! On the MacBook Pro (Mac OS 14.4.1), I went to Settings--->Network--->Firewall but could not add or delete anything from the list of allowed or blocked apps. (In fact, Settings froze completely and I had to force quit.) But I went back to Settings and turned OFF Firewall, turned it back ON, and now everything is fine.

Apple needs to fix the Firewall problem in Mac OS 14.

Been using workarounds for months now to airdrop from my recent SE phone and iPad Air, several times waisted a lot of time to try different suggestions from this forum and all to no avail…..rebooting numerous times this morning on both my devices still no improvement for the last decade at least always could airdrop without any problem until about 6 months ago and thought well ……..next update Apple will get this fixed but not so and this is getting very disappointing.

will just have to accept the fact that texting to my devices is the way to go and forget about Airdrop………..R.I.P. Airdrop

I know exactly what to do. You will never have that problem again ever✅

I had been suffering from that same problem until I said enough is enough and this is what changed the game:

On your iPhone, go to -settings>cellular>personal hotspot

-Then activate: Allow others to join

-Also activate : Maximize Compatibility

Extra tip: turn off cellular data when trying to send something to your iPhone

You are all done. Your problem is resolved forever ✨
