Where is the dock in watchOS 10?

What happened to DOCK, which gave me quick access to the 10 apps I selected and use most, in Watch OS 10? Also, how is pushing the side button easier or better than a quick swipe up to access the Control Panel?

So the swipe up gives you the apps, and pushing the Crown gives you the apps. Both give you the same function?

No.

  • Swipe up gives you the widget stack.
  • Pushing the crown once gives you the apps.
  • Pushing the crown twice gives you the app switcher (analogous to the Dock on previous versions).
  • Pushing the bottom below the crown brings up the Control Center.

The “Dock” was a customizable set of 10 apps, irrespective of app having a widget or being Apple in origin, that was accessible via double click of the side button. OS10 eliminated it. Instead Smart Stack is now accessible via two methods and Dock has zero options now. The closest thing is Complications which is restricted by watch face type. Complications can range from 8 to 0 based on the watch face a user chooses.

yes, the loss of the dock is too bad. I switched my app view to the grid though(instead of list) and just put the apps I use the most at the top. It actually seems a little better than the dock as I have access to about 17 apps instead of just 10. I have regular sized hands and I haven't been clicking on the wrong app yet either(small icons). single click on the crown, and 17 icons of the apps of my choice. Again, the dock was my goto so we shall see how this works out.

So far I'm a fan of having to long press to switch between watch faces. I used to accidentally switch them on a regular basis.

Slight correction -

Pushing the button next* to the Digital Crown brings up the Control Center.

*Most will, but not everyone's watch is configured with the DC on the upper right. I have mine on the lower left. Because of nerve damage in my hand, I press the DC & SB with my thumb.

That is an excellent point. I always appreciate your attention to detail (something that's very important in a technical support answer!).

To my mind, settings access is not at issue here. We all know how to access the settings.

I think you missed the point of my response. The person to whom I was responding (who perhaps has different concerns than you), specifically mentioned settings. Therefore, I included information about that in my response. It sounded as if they were confusing the Control Panel and Settings, which are two different things.

It is the fact that the dock, previously easily accessible with one swipe - and including the apps each wearer prefers most readily accessible, frequently used or not - has vanished. Accessing those apps now involves multiple steps, including adding wear to the watch by requiring even more crown pressing. I’m just curious what the developers thought the value add for the wearer was here.

Tell Apple:

Product Feedback - Apple

Concern about wear is a bit of a straw man. The Digital Crown is designed to be used.

Apple has access to tremendous amounts of user data. They know what features most people use the most office and know the ones most people don't use very much. The developers will never answer your question here. But, I suspect that most people didn't use the Dock that much so, replacing it with the App Switcher which is closer in behavior to the way the iPhone works probably made sense. I never used the Dock so I'm fine with the change.

I don’t see why it matters to anyone who thinks who reads a post. My only interest was to see if there is a viable work around for the broken/missing dock. Or, if there is a back-revision method that was unpublished.

And it has been explained, repeatedly, in this thread, that the dock is gone, replaced by the App Switcher. There is nothing else to say, nothing else to do, other than to let Apple know how important that feature was for you. Continuing to discuss it here will not further your aims. But, if you don't want to tell Apple that it's important to you, that's entirely up to you.
