iPhone call history shared between devices after iOS 17 Update

on my primary device I have iCloud -> contacts turned off, also handoff is turned off on both devices.

Before iOS 17.0, each of my 2 devices has its private call log & contacts.

After iOS 17.0 on both devices, I started to see the call history of both devices on my primary device.

I carry 2 iPhones with the same Apple id since ages, and I don’t want to get confused by which phone initiated personal or business calls.

Its unreasonable to maintain more than one Apple ID after all of this years.

I already reported a bug to Apple. And I came here to see if anyone else noticed/fixed this.

It's not a bug. If you carry two phones – one for work, and one for personal use – for "security" reasons, then it stands to follow that you should "firewall" your accounts and have two Apple ID accounts, as well.

The call history sharing might be new, but there is all sorts of other sharing linked to having the same Apple ID. Sharing that's been around for a long time. E.g., keychain passwords, photos, contacts, calendars, reminders, notes, and files on iCloud Drive.

iMessages are also linked to your Apple ID, whether you use "Messages in iCloud" or not.

Hello Idris, I strongly disagree, assuming that Apple intention is to force a user to maintain different Apple accounts to use different iPhones is defying the purpose of iCloud & the entire eco system.

In my case, if I knew I have to create a different Apple ID for each of my phones with a different cellular number, I’ll not bother buying a second iPhone.

I’d say, it is a new bug, or a poor decision been made without a proper design.

Fair enough but the majority of responses do not just state that "this is how apple wants it" which would be the asked and answered part. There are just as many people repeating the reasons why the OP is wrong, as there are stating that the concern is justified.

Maybe just maybe the more people that voice their opposition to this change, the more people will realize that they are not the only one with the issue, and will be compelled to follow the proper reporting channels. I was one of them as the rep on the phone made me feel like I was the only one with this issue. It wasn't until I read these comments that I was compelled to log a ticket.

But to switch gears and put things back on track, maybe you could explain then the technical benefits/reasons of forced sharing of call logs and voicemails between two phones. I'd imagine if someone wanted to do that, they would also turn on Nearby devices for the second phone as well. So many other things can be turned off, why is this not optional?

You know how to can set up imessage to receive and reply to messages sent to a additional phone numbers? That's only possible if the same ID is used on two phones- and if I'm wrong on that, please tell me how to do it because it would solve my entire issue instantly. So if they didn't want people doing that, you'd think they'd remove a feature like that first. Sharing an ID is not the same as one person using it on two devices they own. The security risk of me using it on two phones that I keep in the same pocket is the same as me using it on one phone and an Ipad. Do they not want that either? I highly doubt that merging the call lists and voicemails is intended as a punishment to dissuade people from putting the same ID on two phones. Seems more like they see it as a feature, and I'm simply trying to understand the intention of it. Surely someone has noticed this and is thrilled that its now a thing. Otherwise we are simply going to have to agree to disagree and say good day.

The setting mentioned there doesn’t help with call log syncing between phones.

my setup always to dedicate a cell number for FaceTime & iMessage per each device, to avoid getting unintended calls on any of my phones.

and it has been working that way, even after iOS 17

the issue is with the call history/log unintended sync between both phones.

i tried every new option provided in iCloud without luck.

actually after iOS 17.01 i turned off all iCloud features on one phone and i still get the history sync to that phone.

Spoke too soon. Its a longer delay on the sync, a work call I made at 8:18am showed up on my personal phone after my last post. This is big pain in The butt.

Wrong, we now see call logs on two separate phone lines. Before we could not, I have had my phones setup like this for about 10 years.

It seems there are very few commenting on here that actually find this a major inconvenience and are not interested in helping with advice.

Do you even have two phones? I find it interesting the comments on here saying deal with it etc. Yep I will deal with it if this is what happens going forward. I will be getting an android next year when my replacement is due.

I don't know what to tell you. It's working as Apple designed it to work. Most people want data which is on one device to be on all devices using the same Apple ID. And that's how Apple engineered it to work.

Why Apple didn't offer the same toggle for phone calls, I can't answer. I don't work for Apple, nor does anyone else on this forum.

All you can do is send your thoughts to Apple directly. You can use this link --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Hello guys.

me too I have been trying to connect Apple since ios 14 to add toggle to stop call log from syncing between devices. They have to put that an option to close it.

No, Apple doesn't have to include that option if they don't want to. But, you should definitely let them know it's important to you:

Perhaps if enough peopl do, they will change their minds.

I find many of the answers on this thread annoying.  Most are saying "don't share your apple ID", with yourself, your kids, your spouse.  Wonder why Apple has Family Sharing?

Family sharing exists so that you can share the things you want or need to without sharing an Apple ID.

I suggest you look into that.

I can certainly understand your frustration, though... after all, it's just Apple's opinion of how their system is designed to work...

iCloud is not the issue. I have it disabled on both phones. No web access either. I have NEVER used iCloud on my phone - so my phones don't sync anything between each other (or to iCloud). I use iTunes and backup my phones weekly.

I have read (not here) that handoff and facetime can cause this. Again, I have both disabled (always have on facetime). It is a function of iOS17 and unless Caper1111 decides to share the solution - I guess we live with it until Apple addresses it. Somewhere in this thread - someone said they talked to tech and it is a fix in a future update (if we believe Apple Tech Support).
