iPhone call history shared between devices after iOS 17 Update

on my primary device I have iCloud -> contacts turned off, also handoff is turned off on both devices.

Before iOS 17.0, each of my 2 devices has its private call log & contacts.

After iOS 17.0 on both devices, I started to see the call history of both devices on my primary device.

I carry 2 iPhones with the same Apple id since ages, and I don’t want to get confused by which phone initiated personal or business calls.

Its unreasonable to maintain more than one Apple ID after all of this years.

I already reported a bug to Apple. And I came here to see if anyone else noticed/fixed this.

It's not a bug. If you carry two phones – one for work, and one for personal use – for "security" reasons, then it stands to follow that you should "firewall" your accounts and have two Apple ID accounts, as well.

The call history sharing might be new, but there is all sorts of other sharing linked to having the same Apple ID. Sharing that's been around for a long time. E.g., keychain passwords, photos, contacts, calendars, reminders, notes, and files on iCloud Drive.

iMessages are also linked to your Apple ID, whether you use "Messages in iCloud" or not.

This is a serious bug IMHO and very frustrating. I don’t want my call history to appear on my work phone at all. Plus, I don’t know if people call my work phone and that was synced to my personal phone or call my personal phone and that was synced to my work phone…

Apple doesn't consider this to be a bug at all, if you use the same Apple ID on two iPhones.

But you can tell Apple you think this is a bug here --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Someone please fix this. I have a work phone and personal phone. I don’t need them both to be connected.

You are asking only other users to fix something not one person here can fix. Apple doesn't participate in or read these posts.

You can let apple know by using the link which has been posted over and over throughout this thread.

Reading thru this posting, I see some people claim this is how it should have worked all along and support not having multiple devices on the same ID.

Others label this change initiated by the iOS 17 Update as a BUG.

I would like to have a definitive answer from Apple explaining, IF this is new functionality, why they decided to abandon decades of configurable sharing between devices using the same AppleID. I get the fact that newer functionality labeled Family Sharing inherently conflicts with the historical functionality to which apple users are accustomed. Changing existing functionality should benefit users rather than create the mass confusion as this change has caused.

It makes no sense why my call history now shows me calling myself and missing some of those same calls and all the other nonsensical entries that are created. I can see no reason for forcing a phone number's history log to show calls from other phone numbers.

I am now forced to create a WORK AROUND (multiple AppleIDs) just to see who called my phone number.

I seem to remember I would have to use a different credit card for each AppleID? If that is still the case, it will create even more problems for users.

I have contacted Apple Support. They instructed me to turn off "Handoff". I also cleared my call history but the next time I was near my wife's phone it populated my phone with her call history.... again.

Your point is well made. Apple doesn't participate here. This community can not effect any changes in the software.

Three things the community is good for:

  1. Voicing your issue
  2. Finding out how widespread an issue is
  3. Attempting to find a resolved topic that someone was kind enough to post.

Canada’s guidelines for online privacy are somewhat weaker than those in the US.

https://www.priv.gc.ca/en/privacy-topics/technology/online-privacy-tracking-cookies/tracking-and-ads/gl_ba_1112/

However, if your children under 13 use your ID to access web sites hosted in the US, US law is still being violated.

I’m not trying to accuse you of committing a crime. I’m merely attempting to educate you (and others who may see this thread) as to one of the reasons sharing an ID is a bad idea.

The bottom line is if you want to stop your call logs from being shared, then stop sharing an ID.

I believe since to many lawyers here saying stop sharing same ID
i have questions
i have to phones
one for friends and family, one for customers in work
so when i go home, i silent my work phone,
so u guys blaming us for using the same id
i have questions. Then i will give the solution
1- do i have to buy each application 2 times. ?
2- why did this sh… happened only in ios 17
3- since u are saying use 2 ids mr lawyers, why i have option to turn everything else. Only phone calls cannot change.

gentelmen
my solution. I beleive. That since we have 2 iphones, Its better to switch to android. At least, only 1 android
i beleive. That will make life easier, Im already ****** off. Cuz when i backup my phone on laptop, Cuz why waste money on iCloud monthly payment for 512gb phone
i think. Its time to change. Since Ios 17.2 didnt solve the problem
and we have some apple lawyers here. Saying. Stop sharing 1 id for ur own 2 phones
i guess we should stop ising 2 iphone
cuz i wont pay for each app 2 times

if someone thinks im wrong
please. Tell me

Family Sharing allows sharing purchases, which is part of why it has been suggested previously in this thread.

Here is: How to share apps and purchases with your family - Apple Support

If Android meets your needs, by all means switch.

I would, however, expect Android might choose to copy this shared-voicemail feature, so I’d suggest migrating to two Google IDs when you switch to Android.

Some of us NEED THIS TO STAY SEPARATED due to the sensitivity of our jobs. Are you going to fix this or should I just buy another brand??

If your job is THAT sensitive, you should NOT be sharing an Apple ID between two phones!

If you are sharing an Apple ID, you're not just talking about sharing call history … but about letting your employer control a device with information from your personal life on it … or placing some of your employer's stuff onto a device that you personally control. An employer who is paranoid about security will likely have policies which prohibit you from using a single Apple ID for both your work life and your personal life.

The only context in which using a single Apple ID, but separating the call logs, makes sense is if your job is NOT sensitive – if your employer isn't worried about the possible risks of mingling work and personal accounts – and you aren't either.

As for "Are you going to fix this," Apple is not here. To give feedback to Apple, you might want to try

In my case I have two iPhones, one personnel and one of the company (my own company) I have only one ID because I want to have only specific shared applications as is the case of the Calendar, the App Week Calendar, Passwords and Notes, nothing held, but I do not want to have shared the history calls because in a phone are professional and in the other are personal, so difficult is to understand Apple developers that not everyone shares our ID with other people.

There are many like you who have a personal phone and work phone. Apple can't tell if you or someone else is using the account. All that can be known is for two phones sharing the same account the rules of sharing apply regardless.
