iPhone call history shared between devices after iOS 17 Update

on my primary device I have iCloud -> contacts turned off, also handoff is turned off on both devices.

Before iOS 17.0, each of my 2 devices has its private call log & contacts.

After iOS 17.0 on both devices, I started to see the call history of both devices on my primary device.

Its unreasonable to maintain more than one Apple ID after all of this years.

I already reported a bug to Apple. And I came here to see if anyone else noticed/fixed this.

It's not a bug. If you carry two phones – one for work, and one for personal use – for "security" reasons, then it stands to follow that you should "firewall" your accounts and have two Apple ID accounts, as well.

The call history sharing might be new, but there is all sorts of other sharing linked to having the same Apple ID. Sharing that's been around for a long time. E.g., keychain passwords, photos, contacts, calendars, reminders, notes, and files on iCloud Drive.

iMessages are also linked to your Apple ID, whether you use "Messages in iCloud" or not.

Phones are completely different and while you may be using one ID for a work and personal phone, they are seen as the same by Apple. If this means you'll be choosing another manufacturer going forward, that's certainly your choice and really doesn't matter to anyone here. You should of course buy the products which best meet your needs.

And just as importantly when migrating, remember to set up those other phones as separate accounts too, as I’d expect other vendors may well continue to merge their accounts and logins, as well. Which might potentially include voicemail.

However, Apple has been very clear for years that Apple IDs should not be shared. To date, there has been no indication that Apple has plans to change course on that.

How can you continue to insist there is nothing to fix when there is literally a series of switches in the settings menu that does exactly that for multiple other items like notes, messages and FaceTime, and one for phone that seems to do nothing (albeit for an hour it does something -only once, then goes back) There’s a switch on the wall that isn’t connected to anything. Either the switch shouldn’t be there, or it’s not doing what it should. It’s a bug one way or another.

It's doing what Apple wants it to be doing. And many here have called Apple who has confirmed this. There is NOTHING to fix, but you can certainly wait for a fix, which likely will never come. Your choice.

You've asserted it before (and the posts have been removed), but to be clear, Apple is NOT storing any of your user data or anyone else's user data on their servers. Perhaps saying something you don't know to have any validity doesn't make sense?

iCloud synchronization of things like Photos, Contacts, and iCloud Drive files inherently involves storage of user data on Apple's servers. Doesn't mean that Apple is going through that data to invade anyone's privacy.

For many categories of data, Apple says that they use end-to-end encryption and do not even store encryption keys for use on your behalf. ("Apple doesn't have the encryption keys for these categories, and we can't help you recover this data if you lose access to your account.")

iCloud data security overview - Apple Support

In terms of records of whom called whom, the phone companies would have those records, whether Apple ever did any iCloud synchronization or not. The NSA is known to have collected bulk phone records directly from the phone companies – with major carriers voluntarily cooperating with the NSA to facilitate the collection of what I have seen described as "massive, illegal dragnet surveillance."

If someone is worried about the privacy of their call logs, THAT – what the NSA and phone companies are doing, or at least, have done in the past - is the thing to be worried about. Not synchronization of call logs for the same Apple ID.

Thank you for posting this. This is exactly what I believe is the case and your post proves I am right. It’s a bug in iOS 17+. My call logs and visual voicemail suddenly started syncing between my 2 iPhones that are sharing one Apple ID. Both my iPhones have their own completely different cell #’s.

This has to be a bug and nothing else makes sense.

By the way, one has to wonder how much trouble this likely caused for many couples sharing one Apple ID.

I don't share Apple ID with other family member, both 2 phones are mine. So that why I must make 2 Apple ID for my 2 phones?

If both phones are yours, why would you have an issue with merged call logs and voicemail? I'm going to assume one is a personal phone and one is a work phone. I would never use the same Apple ID on a work phone as my personal phone. In most cases, this gives access to an employer to own the data on the phone, which I would personally never permit. But that's up to you.

As far as Apple is concerned, using the same Apple ID on more than one iPhone, the phones are seen as the same device. Whatever your reason is for using the same Apple ID on more than one iPhone, this is your new normal.

I don't know why you feel it is important for me to understand your reasons? Not one person here works for Apple. Not one person here had anything to do with this change. Not one person here has the ability to change how Apple has chosen to implement this.

Complain to Apple if you're not happy about this.

I have the same issue, work phone and personal phone call logs all mixed up.

I logged a support case with apple and they wanted me to factory reset both phones,

like that will do anything, but to prove it still does it i fired up another iPhone and signed in with another sim and called it, and call logs go to other phones also.

I am going to have to create separate apple accounts I guess.

I have recently called Apple several times and have spoken to different techs at different levels of seniority. NONE of them stated it is working as intended. They all told me how and where to submit my feedback and concerns. I did so.

Plus, I’m waiting to hear back from someone who is on Xmas vacation who I am confident will be a big help in finding out more about this issue.

Every device logged into the same AppleID will be treated as a single device, and information will be shared between them just as apps are.

Apple generally doesn't issue "clarifying statements" but feel free to ask for one at the link below.
