iPhone call history shared between devices after iOS 17 Update

on my primary device I have iCloud -> contacts turned off, also handoff is turned off on both devices.

Before iOS 17.0, each of my 2 devices has its private call log & contacts.

After iOS 17.0 on both devices, I started to see the call history of both devices on my primary device.

I carry 2 iPhones with the same Apple id since ages, and I don’t want to get confused by which phone initiated personal or business calls.

Its unreasonable to maintain more than one Apple ID after all of this years.

I already reported a bug to Apple. And I came here to see if anyone else noticed/fixed this.

It's not a bug. If you carry two phones – one for work, and one for personal use – for "security" reasons, then it stands to follow that you should "firewall" your accounts and have two Apple ID accounts, as well.

The call history sharing might be new, but there is all sorts of other sharing linked to having the same Apple ID. Sharing that's been around for a long time. E.g., keychain passwords, photos, contacts, calendars, reminders, notes, and files on iCloud Drive.

iMessages are also linked to your Apple ID, whether you use "Messages in iCloud" or not.

I was just following this thread and I was thinking why would you share your Apple ID with others? I personally wouldn’t, I can share it with my devices but not with someone else they could d/l all my files and photos delete them … I prefer the share my position or family share options, just a thought

The people here who seem most concerned, are people who have a personal iPhone and work iPhone and they use the same Apple ID on both phones. They don't want the call logs merged, which they actually should have been merging before iOS 17. I will be very surprised if Apple does anything to change this.

Tell me where I allowed my History calls to be synch. The questions never been asked to me. You got many settings to choose to allow synch but calls history is not one of them. My point is, calls history should be bind to phone numbers not APPLE ID. You get the idea?

Much as I respect lobsterghosts1's opinons, it really doesn't matter if they get it or not because they can't make the changes you want.

I am also facing the same trouble, even closing all the guided settings though my call logs are sharing between both devices. I would like to suggest to apple kindly repair this error as soon as possible as it is creating very much confusing regarding the calls as well as privacy of private number and official number.

Agreed something along these lines would be a normal software release timeline, and these things take time.

But I question that this is a ‘feature request’ because again, what else could be the purpose of that new phone toggle under iCloud settings? If I turn off messages it stops the messages syncing across devices. If I turn off contacts, it stops contacts syncing across devices. It doesn’t seem like a leap of logic to assume the phone toggle is supposed to stop phone calls syncing across devices. And if not this, what?

So it seems more likely to me that this is a bug and the new feature that Apple implemented isn’t working as designed. Bug fixes take time too, but a slightly different timeline from what you have described here as the requirements/impacts will already be known.

My senior citizen parents are using the same apple id as they don't know how to access id's etc. now the calls I am receiving the same is showing in my parents phone, my missed calls are showing in my parents phone and they are giving them call back by thinking that they missed somone's call. How come apple belives that this isn't an issue or how apple intended to work it like this way by sharing your call details with other devices? There must be some settings or some sollution regarding the same. Even i have done all the resolution regarding this by turning off icloud drive, contants in icloud as well as airplay and handoff, even though it is sharing the same.

Apple intends an Apple ID to be used by one person. The solution to your problem is for your parents to each have their own Apple ID.

Please don't make the ageist assumption that your parents can't learn how to do something because they are "senior citizens". The majority of the long time voluteers here are "senior citizens". Using an iPhone doesn't change significantly with a different Apple ID. And, as they will stop having the confusion engendered by sharing one, it may, in fact be easier.

It sounds like the OP is sharing an Apple ID with his or her parents. I can't think of any upside to that.

Even if the parents do not mind sharing their passwords so that the OP can help to manage their settings for them, they need to be on a different Apple ID, or IDs, than the OP.

Since the sharing of messages and call logs between the OP and his or her parents seems to be the biggest issue, getting the OP on a different ID than his or her parents would seem to be the low-hanging fruit – more important in the short term than getting the parents on different IDs from each other.

Nor can I. It sounds like a recipe for very serious confusion. Especially if they don't live in the same household.

Agree 100%.

This behaviour was introduced with iOS 17. Of course Apple can make changes. And wishing they keep doing so. At the end, we the clients are the purpose of Apple existence, nothing else. If they don't hear us and I bet

they do, they will lose clients. Some of them already state they'll change for Android. I won't but that's my choice.

I did the temporary workaround of creating a second ID but it's a nonsense. Not

logical at all.

This feature can be seen either way from one hand it looks like a breach of privacy on the other hand it's looking like an enhanced privacy feature because you have total control on all your devices. The problem is you can't toggle it off, so you are nor really in control of it, surely not on how two different phone numbers can be linked to each other without your consent which could create a privacy problem. This matter might even have different interpretation in different countries. It's also true that you can easily avoid it using two different Apple ID accounts. The problem persists anyway in my opinion

It the same topic, I own numerous Apple devices, all using my apple ID.

If I am doing personal banking on one device thinking that the data is safe on that device, and not being synchronized on all devices, then IMO thats a concern with what the original topic was started about. The topic is the uncontrolled synchronization of data.

I am not a computer geek by any means, so if Apple is changing things in the background that we as users cannot control. I am inclined to log out of my ID on every other device.

Funny if you ask ChatGPT you get different answers. And bellow I added another result with how to enable Call History. I never found this settings. I did removed some points to fit the text in here.

Question to ChatGPT : In iOS iPhone what does the telephone apps in Apps using iCloud do?

As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, the iPhone's native "Phone" app does not directly utilize iCloud for storing its data or settings. However, iCloud can be used for various purposes that indirectly affect the Phone app and its functionality. Here are some of the ways iCloud may interact with the Phone app and other related features:

  1. iCloud Backup: When you enable iCloud backup, it backs up the data on your iPhone, which includes your call history, contacts, and other essential phone-related data. This backup ensures that if you ever need to restore your iPhone, your Phone app's data will be included.
  2. Call History Sync: In some cases, your call history may sync across devices through iCloud. For example, if you receive a call on your iPhone and also have an iPad or Mac, you might see that call in the call history of those other devices if they are signed in with the same iCloud account.
  3. Synchronization: iCloud synchronization generally ensures that your data remains consistent across your Apple ecosystem, which indirectly benefits the Phone app by keeping contact information and call history up to date.

Please note that Apple may have introduced new features or changes related to iCloud and the Phone app since my last update. To get the most accurate and up-to-date information, you can refer to Apple's official documentation or visit the Settings app on your iPhone to explore iCloud settings and options.

---

In iOS, the iPhone's telephone app, also known as the "Phone" app, allows you to make and receive calls, manage your contacts, and access your voicemail. iCloud is Apple's cloud storage and synchronization service, and it can be integrated with the Phone app to help you manage your contacts, call history, and other phone-related data across your Apple devices. Here's how iCloud works with the Phone app on your iPhone:

Call History:

If you enable iCloud Call History, your recent call history (incoming, outgoing, and missed calls) will be stored in iCloud. This allows you to access your call history from any of your iCloud-connected devices.

To enable iCloud Call History, go to "Settings," tap your Apple ID, select "iCloud," and toggle on "Call History." This way, your call history will be synchronized across your Apple devices.

Please note that ChatGPT is not infrequently wrong and also just makes up answers. It is not, at this stage of its development, reliable.
