Not getting mail notifications after watchOS update

Hello

Before I upgraded to version 10 of my watch (I have the Ultra) and 17 on my phone, I was getting email notifications. Now, it is very random with no pattern that I can determine. For example, last night I got notified of one email but 5 min later I never received a notification of another email that I received.

If I swipe on the watch, I can see the email but I want the watch to notify me of incoming mail from certain accounts.

I have checked my pairing to my 13 Pro Max and it seems to be connected. I am not in DND mode or airplane mode.

I am in a hotel where cell service is not great (2 - 3 bars) but there is cell service and wifi

I am looking for any suggestions or ideas.

thanks for any help

Gary

i am guessing that the moderator deleted my other thread that I started where I detailed the problem I was having. In that thread I gave a lot of details about the actual problem .

After 4+ hours on the phone with Apple across 3 days and sending logs, screen shots, and then about 5 times more time me playing with the phone and watch, I think I found the problem on my own, in the Apple mail program on the phone. This was working great on IOS 16 I Hope that this helps someone.

It appears that in IOS 17, Apple changed how the Mail app works and interacts and pulls mail from Gmail and other (POP) providers and changed how often these types of accounts get mail (probably to save battery??)

So if you want you gmail to appear on the watch reliably, , you basically have two options

1- You can change the fetch duration from automatic to 15 min. As I understand it, in theory the phone will check Gmail and POP accounts every 15 min. After I changed this setting I had better results than the default "automatic" but I still I found it sporadic

2- The other option is to configure Gmail on the IOS mail app to think it is Microsoft Exchange. Making this change, will allow the phone to pull email from the server and then send it to the watch almost as soon as it arrives. Which is what I wanted... Warning. in a very old internet blog from 2021 on a different subject, I am told that this only works for PAID Gmail accounts. so someone should try it and let us know since I only have a paid account

so Now that my Gmail hosted account is notifying me with a tone, all that needs to be fixed is

  • Haptic feedback is not working on most notifications

  • I am only getting the notification pop up on the watch randomly.

I am hoping on an upcoming IOS update will fix these things since I believe it is a little beyond my hacking skills :)

I hope this helps someone.

Hey there henryga,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We'll be happy to help with notifications on your Apple Watch. Since this started while you're away from home, let's see if you can connect to Wi-Fi or test in another location. If the issue happens only in one location, then it's likely that there's not a hardware or software issue.

If it happens only at certain hours of the day, check your settings: Use Focus on Apple Watch - Apple Support

Take care.
