After iOS 17 update we are receiving each other’s voicemails on our iPhone

Why are my husband and I receiving each other’s voicemails?


After the last update 17 on our iPhone 14 we have been receiving each other’s voicemails. Call forwarding is off and live voicemail is off on both phones.

We’ve shared an Apple ID for more than a decade with no problems - this started after doing the latest update

2 different phone numbers. 2 different physical devices with their own unique identifiers. There are zero reasons to intermingle these devices and for data to be automatically shared between the two unless the user makes a conscious decision opt in.


Family sharing does not work worth a darn. Shared data frequently does not get updated in a timely manner.


They very fact that Apple allows you to choose what number or email to use for FaceTime and Imessage, shows you that Apple is well aware that phone numbers are assigned to unique devices.


Let's mot even get into Apple making massive setting changes during a update instead of carrying over those settings. Acting more like Android devices every day.

Reading another thread, it’s been suggested to go to Settings -> Phone and disable Live Voicemail. That seemed to resolve the voicemails on my iPhone 15 back to just being my own phone number’s history. But doing the same on my wife’s iPhone 12 did not resolve the issue there. Her vmail still shows all my history. Not sure what the rest of the family experiences. Yes we share an AppleID as we always have, and have been on the honor system to only select our own phone numbers in Messages and Facetime so as not to invade each other’s privacy (mileage varies there as iOS upgrades can check off multiple numbers again) but it’s worked fine with the phone vmail for years. Why did Apple and or ATT change this now? A warning on the upgrade would have been appreciated. Also, it should be corrected / reverted with a fix that removes incorrect historical voicemails on each other’s phones, and not just from a patch/upgrade point forward. Anyhow not here, need to find out how to complain to Apple proper.

Another option would be to quit iCloud completely. Other services provide cloud storage services and you could use your email provider for calendar and contacts.

Personally I like the Apple integrated eco-system, so will stay with them a while longer to see if they make a change to the non-bug that was introduced with iOS 17.

Everyone saying to stop sharing Apple ID’s, you’re talking about Apple data. My phone calls and voicemails which I pay AT&T to provide should NOT be pulled into what Apple decides to do with their device.


Full stop Apple is grossly overstepping with this and they need to fix this. It’s a privacy violation on so many levels and why my husband and I have separate phone numbers so stop with the whole stop sharing an Apple ID nonsense because that’s what it is.

Apple has discouraged sharing recently, many of us were sharing upon inception of Apple products and it was common and accepted to have one family ID.


I understand the evolution, you don’t appreciate the history or legacy.

My Apple ID was created before 2010, which is before 2014, this problem occurred in 2023 with IOS17.


yes It’s here to stay. No it didn’t need to be as we can specify every other type of communication to every device except this one.


yes, I’m upset. Many others are. Being condescending doesn’t help.

I have never used one but wonder how a dual SIM phone handles this issue? A phone with two numbers, a business number and a personal number. Seems that the business number must have its own separate call log and voice mail. Does that require two separate IDs? Two numbers, one phone, one user, two IDs. Or are there special rules for this type of user?

One Apple ID means one user means everything is shared.

Mr Finch: personal question. Numerous times on here I have been told that you all are just users, same as me. But you telling Apple what to put on their web pages sounds like you are more than just a user. Are you Apple staff, paid or volunteer, working with Apple authority? Just curious.

are you an Apple employee?


Apple ID is a way for a person to connect multiple Apple devices. An individual can decide which devices can receive which communications. There are settings that turn on / off iMessages, emails, FaceTime, etc by device.


IOS 17 literally took that choice away for phone messages. Phone messages that are literally specific to one decive( ie the phone)


I would understand and have no problem with Apple giving me a choice to share my phone messages to multiple devices, like it does for every other type of communication.


however, Apple has taken away that choice and decided phone messages will be handled differently than every other form of communication.


your response is, do not share Apple IDs.


that is inconsistent with how all other forms of communication are handled among multiple devices.


why are you ok with that?

I don't recall that Lawrence has said he's "ok" with it. He has repeatedly stated, however, that it is the way it is now. We all understand by now that you don't like that. But no amount of arguing over when or if it used to be different will change anything. Whether or not people like or don't like it will not change how it is right now.


All you can do is learn how to cope with the current situation. And provide feedback to Apple.

Most of this discussion has been about voice mails showing up on another phone, apparently due to a shared Apple ID. So a slightly different take. My understanding is that my carrier, not Apple, provides cell service, text messages, and voice mail. I would assume that when I check my VMs that I am going to my carrier for those messages. So how could the VMs for one number show up under another number even with a shared Apple ID.
