iOS 17 gray call screen

I'm sure that I am not the only one. After the IOS 17 update was shocked to see that horrible gray call screen. Who in the technical department decided that was a good idea? and also moving all the buttons to the bottom of the screen. Certainly is vey ugly as far a I'm concerned. I know there's no fix for it here, just getting it of my chest.

As I said the call screen has always been black, incoming or outgoing calls. Now with IOS 17 the call screen is an ugly gray color, with all the buttons that used to be in the middle now moved to the bottom. I'm not even sure if apple now why? I put in a request to apple support and was booked for a midday callback, that was 3 days ago.

The Calling screen was actually transparent which was so innovative & clean. If you had a poster for a contact that would be kinda blurred/transparent while in the call, for contacts without a poster your wallpaper would just be blurred in the background. It was so aesthetically pleasing. However now this gray screen thing is just so ugly......so much so that I actually cring when making a call. If you have a custom poster for someone the way it's blurred now isn't quit transparent if that makes sense, just a blob.... not clean. To be honest this seems like a whole step back, how do you go from a transparent screen to an almost soild one? It also makes the buttons look less sophisticated, the font way too bold & starch white. I thought transparency was the future, everything just looks choppy and less refined. The only neat thing about this new update is how you can customize your own contact poster and control how your viewed when you call another iphone user.

Meanwhile, use Siri to make calls and you won't have to look at the oh-so-troubling contact screen.

Honestly, the first time I saw it, I thought that something had happened and my phone went into some kind of emergency setting. Or that I somehow pressed something wrong in settings.

It just looks hideous and wrong. I hate it. I want my old call screen back. Or at the very least, an option to choose whatever color I want on the call screen.

If I needed an android phone I could have got an android one not an iPhone that looks like android! The worst decision ever from developers at apple! Please switch us back to the old one that we used to since several years now…. Apple is Apple not orange or pear or a banana for that matter! It’s an iconic brand and a stature symbol! It’s serious…

@Dogcow-Moof: I watched the video you posted. Is this feature the cause of all our issues with the gray call screen? Is that how it is a notable feature? I don't see any utility in it, especially for business use. I do see privacy concerns. I do see a lot of complicated steps involved to expose information about ourselves to others we call.

Since you were so kind as to show us a promotional video on how to navigate this complicated feature many of us don't want or need, would you also be so kind as to show us how to be sure it is turned off so that our private information is not shared with other iPhone users without our knowledge just because we happen to call them?

What you have brought to light in your post here is that it is not just a gray call screen issue, it is a privacy issue with a complicated new feature we need to know how to disable to protect our privacy. At least that is what I'm seeing from the video you posted - please correct me if I'm wrong. This is a user-to-user forum I understand, so I'm asking for your help here to protect my privacy and understand how to disable this feature which I do not wish to use in any way, shape, or form.

I have Dark Mode enabled, which provides beautiful contrast with full colors throughout the entire iOS interface with minimal power use (black pixels use no energy on modern OLED displays). At least Dark Mode used to do this for me. The Call Screen and Contacts are now no longer working with Dark Mode. That alone is a UI design inconsistency issue with crippling effects in this case.

@Dogcow-Moof: Unfortunately, while that video can help for contacts, it really doesn't solve the main grey screen issue. If you go into contacts and press to call them, it will automatically dial, so there is no need to see the keypad numbers. So the grey screen doesn't make a difference with that.

But if you are calling a new number, or a number not in your contacts, then you can't change the screen color for that. And it you are in a bright place, or have bad eyes, you can't see that screen properly all the time, due to the lack of contrast between the grey screen and white letters.

Now, before you say "Go tell Apple" again, I have actually sent a complaint about this issue and a request that it either be changed back or that they allow us to change that color for all calls. And I listed the above reasons for my complaint. I have yet to hear back from them. Though they may be swimming through tons of complaints about this latest update and either not gotten to mine yet. Or (and this is more probable), they simply don't have the time to reply to everyone, so they focus on replying only to the more serious issues. Of which, this would not be considered serious.

That being said, a lack of reply doesn't mean they won't look into this issue and try to fix it in the future.

I do agree with you, in that more people who have an issue with this should contact Apple about it, and hope that if enough of us complain, they will do something about it.

And I do appreciate your video, even if it is not a fix to the crux of the problem, because I had no idea I could just change the background color of contacts without adding a photo. I never wanted to add photos, so I never edited that, or knew I could fiddle with monograms or color on my contacts. So, I am grateful that you posted that video. Thank you, very much.

Hello~ Being both old and disabled myself I find their comments appalling. Also the color of the call screen doesn’t seem to affect me at all.

I'm old (except in my own mind) and have imperfect health. I would never want someone to make assumptions about my capabilities based on either of those factors. If there's something I can't do or need help with, I'll say something (or not, depending on what I think is appropriate). I think it's fine to ask people who appear to be struggling with a task if they would like help. But never assume.

Hello~ The only thing we can count on is change whether we like it or not. It changed and it will change again….guaranteed. I can’t see well and can barely hold my iPhone in either hand but I focus the energy I have learning to adapt. We can argue, disagree and complain here from now on but it changes nothing. It is what it is and it will be what it is again. We are fellow forum members and can’t do a single thing to grant your wish. Argue on but best be prepared to deal with it and changes to come. I am sorry there are those that are unhappy with the change as over many years there have been changes that have made me raise an eyebrow as well but here I am continuing onward. Take care.
