Can't select AirPrint Printer after iOS 17 Update

When I try to print the no printer selected is displayed, when I select the printer it starts to connect but the no printer selected comes back. There is a printer there and has worked previously, is this something because of an update?

There is a printer there but it does not pick it up, it was fine last week. Is this because of an update?

I can no longer print from my iPhone to my HP Printer after the latest software update. No printer, select HP Printer, “Gathering Printer Information then goes back to select printer. Very frustrating

I attempted to print for the first time since the iOS 17.1.1 update. My iphone 12 Pro Max can find my Canon MF260, but it will not stay selected and print.

I double checked the network settings and reboot my router, printer, and phone. I had not changed anything and was able to print prior to the cellphone iOS update.

I downloaded the file to my PC and the file printed just fine. It appears there is a definite glitch in the iOS update and it appears there are others having issues with the update as well.

I wrote in this string after installation of 17.0.1 and 17.0.2, regarding the apparent conflict with Norton VPN on an iPhone 13 mini. I just installed 17.0.3 and the "no printer selected" issue popped up again. I tried a simple restart of the iPhone - no dice. As earlier, I turned off the VPN - nope. I restarted the iPhone after turning off VPN - YEAH! :-)

As an experiment, I turned VPN back on and restarted iPhone - "no printer selected". And again, turned off VPN and restarted iPhone - VOILA'! :-) This is not occurring with Norton VPN turned on and Windows on my laptop.

So, at least in my case, the problem is that IOS 17 does not play nice with Norton VPN and seems to have nothing to do with the WiFi network or printers themselves, as the only changes I have made in my experiment is VPN on or off.

I discovered the solution to have my iPhone 12 begin printing again over my WiFi here at home. It was a duel VPN issue and WiFi settings on my iPhone. I have both a Norton 360 VPN and an AT&T VPN (Virtual Private Network) system. If you have Norton 360 or another network security app installed on you phone, be sure to make your network provider's built-in VPN as your primary choice VPN. My Network Provider is AT&T . Then set your secondary network security app to activate only when it detects your primary provider VPN seems not secure.

Next go to your iPhone Settings, choose WiFI, slide the button off, scroll down to "ask to join Networks" and select Off. Turn off your iPhone and Printer. Power on your iPhone, go to Settings and turn on Wi-Fi, then power on your printer. Test printing a document. For the first time printing you'll need to select a printer. The document should now print. Subsequent printings should automatically choose the last printer you selected.

Same issue. When I try to print the no printer selected is displayed, when I select the printer (HP Officejet 5740) it starts to connect but the no printer selected comes back. This has worked previously. I also have a HP ENVY Photo 7855 printer that luckily is still working.

iOS 17.1.1

HP Officejet 5740 printer.

It works ok with my HP ENVY Photo 7855

I resolve this exact issue by turning off “Safe WEB under Internet Security” in Norton360. I retested by turning it back on and issue returned so I turned it off when I want to print. No change with IOS 17.1.2 today.

I’m still calling this an Apple IOS 17 issue since it has never occurred with IOS 15 or 16.

How many complaints will this take before Apple responds with a fix??? This has been going on for at least 3 months! I just installed the brand new super-duper iOS 17.1.2 and still the same AirPrint issue.

With Norton 360 VPN turned on, I cannot print to either Brother wireless HL-2370DW or HL-L3230CDW, even though both have the most up-to-date firmware installed. Again, this is NOT a problem for wireless printing from my Windows laptop, which also has Norton 360 VPN installed, so this is NOT a Norton or Brother problem, but rather an APPLE PROBLEM!

Hi,

This has been posted in the macOS Earlier Operating Systems forum, but your profile indicates iPhone 11 and iOS 17.

Please post back with information about the exact device(s) and/or Mac computer(s) in use. Also, the exact operating system version(s).

Furthermore, answering a question about printing is much easier if the printer model is known.

In the meantime, if an AirPrint printer is used, you may want to carry out a test with the following procedure (in this order, with these waiting times, do not forget the router):

Power off the Wi-Fi router, the printer, all iPhones and iPads, all Macs, and any other computers/devices. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the router. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the printer. Wait a minute or two. Power on all iPhones and iPads, and all Macs. Finally, power on any other computers/devices. Any change?

Camerleytone: This is same error message (no printer selected) that I am getting, but only on my iPadPro with iOS 17.2. My ancient iPhone 7+ which is running iOS 15.7.9 prints just fine - no error message. That’s why I think the problem is related to the newer OS just downloaded on iPadPro. I have tried printing to my Brother HL-L8350CDW series AND my HP ENVY Photo 7800 series F96EDF. Before the new iOS on iPadPro, I did not have one problem printing to either one of these printers. I am going to try turning everything off like suggested below. I hope it works.

Hi dfiles1947,

Thank you for the information. As I wrote already September 22, there had been other reports about problems in connection with the iOS 17 upgrade. The power-cycle procedure (which often can help solving AirPrint device discovery difficulties) was merely a test here, but it does not appear to have made a difference in several cases. Additional things that have been suggested include checking that a VPN is not used and that the private Wi-Fi address feature is not on. It may be necessary to wait for yet another update.

Hi,

You may want to check that this AirPrint-supported printer has the latest firmware. If not, try an update.

Also, you could try a full power-cycle sequence (including the router, printer and iPhone). Furthermore, if applicable, check whether there is a change with VPN and/or private Wi-Fi address off.

If nothing else works, it may be worth testing the Brother Print&Scan iOS app (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/brother-iprint-scan/id382775642), at least as a temporary/limited solution.

Hi BigKurt,

Both printers, MFC-J870DW and MFC-J1010DW, are listed in About AirPrint - Apple Support (en-us, November 13, 2023).

Regarding AirPrint troubleshooting, you may want to have a look at the following user tip by Lawrence Finch:

AirPrint Troubleshooting - Apple Community

If nothing else works, you could perhaps also try the Brother iPrint&Scan app or Brother Mobile Connect (the latter for MFC-J1010DW).
