CarPlay iOS17 not working

So since I did the iOS 17 update, CarPlay no longer works. I have reset the settings on my phone, my car, went through every step I found online and I have installed the most recent bug fix. So I am at a loss and I am assuming when my iPhone 15 Pro Max gets here today that I will still have the problem

Greetings Erklee102381,

To ensure that you're covering all the bases, the following steps may be able to provide you with some additional assistance:

"Check your wired or wireless connection and your iPhone settings

If your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS, follow these steps—checking CarPlay after each step:

  1. Check your connection to your CarPlay stereo:
    • If you have a wired connection, try connecting again with a different USB cable to a different USB port if you have one.
    • If you have a wireless connection, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on on your iPhone under Settings > Bluetooth. Then go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure that Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned on.

2. If CarPlay doesn't activate automatically, look for the CarPlay logo on your car's display and select it.

3. Restart your iPhone and your car.

4. Make sure that Siri is on.

5. If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure that CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If Content & Privacy Restrictions is on, tap Allowed Apps, and make sure that CarPlay is enabled.

6. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, then tap Forget This Car. Then set up CarPlay again.

7. Make sure that your CarPlay stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.

If you still have issues connecting to CarPlay, contact Apple Support.

Connect your iPhone with a USB-C connector to CarPlay with the USB-C to Lightning Adapter

You can use the USB-C to Lightning Adapter with wired CarPlay in most vehicles. However, some combinations of adapters, cables, and vehicle entertainment systems might disrupt the wired CarPlay connection. In this situation or for cars that support only wired CarPlay, use a direct connection with a USB cable.

I am having this same issue with my 2023 accord. Mine worked perfectly fine when I started driving yesterday. Stopped for gas and boom. No longer connecting car play. That was with my iPhone 12 Pro Max which was on iOS 17 since it released. I did basic TSing and still nothing. My iPhone 15 was at home waiting for me so I activated it. Tried again in the car and NOTHING! This is extremely aggravating as I have a similar issue with my 2016 accord coupe.

the blue tooth audio also went super flaky after the update to iOS 17.1.1 on my iPhone 14 Pro Max. It’s a 2016 Nissan rogue which used to be able to control the music app on my iPhone over Bluetooth flawlessly with both the steering wheel controls and dash / radio buttons (skip, pause, rewind, etc).

resetting the infotainment center works only for about 3 songs before the music will cease to shuffle, stop playing any songs even if pressing the play button on screen or on phone. Also the “shuffle” feature always orders the songs the same now when prior to this update I would get a randomized playlist.

super frustrating, doesn’t seem to be resolved with cable swaps or deleting and reconnecting through Bluetooth

I have a 2023 Jeep compass and ever since the 17.2 update, not only can I not hear Siri she’s not reading out loud text messages, she’s not recognizing my voice controls so I’m trying to search a song on Spotify and I had to disconnect my device remove it deleted off my car, disable CarPlay and now it’s actually holding a charge. I was connecting it from USB-C inside the vehicle to the phone and it would charge and stop and charge and stop every two seconds so there’s definitely something going on because it’s treating my voice command like it’s a phone call and it’s muting everything.

Yep this is the same for me too. BMW x3 idrive and iPhone 13 mini. Ever since the first 17.2 release and every release since then. Every time i get into the car I have to disable bluetooth and re-enable for my iphone to play music. Full factory reset of the cars idrive and the iphone did not fix the issue :( I programmed one of the cars audio buttons to the disable/enable bluetooth menu to make it a little quicker but its still annoying as ****.

If the problem can be fixed by rebooting or resetting the Ford head end, it's a Ford issue.

Any device that connects with the iPhone (or any other device) should never get into a state where it requires a reboot (or reset) to continue proper operation.

I've worked with Apple Support in the past when I've had an Apple device that would stop working and would only function properly after a reboot, and eventually those devices were fixed via a software update. (A recent example; an iPad would disconnect from a particular wireless network and any attempt to reconnect would fail until I rebooted the iPad - that clearly put the onus on it being an iPad issue.)

Given all this, it's clearly Ford's responsibility to diagnose and correct this issue.

(The same is true for other manufacturers' head ends that require a reboot or reset to operate properly.)

If you do an Internet search you will find myriad complaints about Ford's head end from both Apple and Android users.

Here is an example I myself experienced this past year:

I had been using CarPlay in a rental Ford without issue for multiple days in a row, but one day it decided it would not see the iPhone as a CarPlay device, just as a USB music player.

Nothing I could do would get the Ford head end to recognize the device. I tried different cords, I tried shutting the vehicle off, turning it back on, and nothing.

I finally gave up and went into a store.

When I came out of the store 45 minutes later and reconnected, the Ford recognized the device as a CarPlay device immediately.

I did not reboot my iPhone. I did not install an update to my iPhone. It was completely a Ford head end issue.

As far as your issues starting after a software update, that still doesn't mean the problem is Apple's.

The example I like to give is this:

Say a head end has a routine to add two numbers.

If the iPhone asks what "2 + 3" is, the head end answers "5," but if it asks for the total of "3 + 2," the head end answers "6."

If a software change causes iOS to always ask the total of "3 + 2" and it gets the wrong answer, it's not Apple's responsibility to go back to adding "2 + 3."

My original post was removed twice now because it was "off-topic", which is incorrect. I am letting people know that Apple created new version of "CarPlay" with this update (ios 17). Or so it seems.

I found this on other (reddit) forums, where people actually get answers. So if Apple doesn't want to solve the issue, let me just share it at least.

What's frustrating is that apple support ignores the new carplay update:

iOS - CarPlay - Apple

I am open for the Community to correct me if I am wrong (not the "Apple Support Community Staff"). Please. This helped me, I am sure it will be helpful to someone in the community.

That's what I thought too!! however the Apple Care rep convinced me otherwise. He said that when they develop major iOS updates (like 16,17,18,etc and not just 16.1.2 or 17.2) there is a chance for the older car models no longer work with the new software.

And I did ALL of the steps of troubleshooting, spending around 2 hours on the phone collectively with different representatives.

That's not the way software debugging and diagnosis works.

If the issue started with an update of iOS, and if resetting the car head end works, the issue is with the car, not iOS.

The fact that millions of iPhones with the update installed continue to work in other cars is proof of that.

This type of thing happens when those programming car head ends make improper assumptions that the way things work today is the way they will always work, rather than follow Apple documentation describing how things actually work and how they will work in the future.
