Apple Watch Ultra 2 VERY dim inside and dark enviroments..

Hello.

I just bought a very expensive Ultra 2 Watch. I am happy with the watch overall, but what totally ruins the experience is it is SO dim inside and in dark enviroments! I can hardly read it. There is no override available and the brightness is set to full. My son has a Series 6 and that is brighter in the same conditions. This cant be real? This so called "ULTRA" is more weak in brightness performance than an older regular Apple Watch. If there is something I HATE it is factory controlled auto stuff like this! We know the watch can be brighter so WHY on earth is it locked to a weak sensor that is WAY to low calibrated? I know its unfortunately not a hardware issue as ALL other Ultra Watch suffer from this ridicolous factory setting. Why can I not disable this auto dim or at least raise the lower minimum brightness. This is a disaster, as I can hardly read the watch in my office and living room where we have low light usually. This is almost a RETURN ISSUE for me! The fact that the user cannot set this setting when I bought and paid for the watch is a disgrace! And for those that reply its working as intended I can see by a search that hundreds of other users complain about this "error". This HAS to be corrected in a software update ASAP!

Hello. Yes you are right- it almost seems like it dosent matter with this brightness slider! And I know the watch can be ultra bright IF you take a flashlight and light onto it. :( I just HATE these factory locked settings where "they know whats best for you!". But this is an essential thing for me to use! What if I was 70 years and had a bad vision! I really cant understand Apples way of thinking here! So I contacted support and they say the best we can do is write this complaint/ request at this feedback page which I did from two email accounts! ;) So PLEASE file a request or hardware issue! I did one on both topics!

For the record:

I have made additional phone calls regarding this issue.

I have placed three complaints in the feedback site, including a formal complaint and request for an accommodation.

All indications from my experience, and from reading the ad on Apple.com (including the image of what the watch is supposed to look like at night, which is grossly inaccurate) is that there is currently no recognition that this is a problem, and no plan as of yet to provide a remedy.

I apologize to the community if my previous posts led some to believe that my problem was fixed. It is true that my first watch was truly a lemon. If you think your watch is bad, you have no idea how bad the first one was. I initially thought my new watch was fixed, but on continued use I find it to be unusable and actually dangerous.

Please Apple, just do the right thing! Be better!

UPDATE

So I did install 10.0.2 and things are still working better on this watch (ie, number 3)

I can't say fixed as I haven't yet compared it to the one my friend has to see if the display is as good. This will happen tomorrow.

I spent an hour today with Apple. We went over all the maneuvers and observations that I've made. They installed a monitoring program on the watch/phone so that if the problem persists, I can take a screen shot and then they can see what the watch is up to.

As of now, they have at least one of the bad actors in their possession, so hopefully they can do a detailed analysis. The remote program they used before would only pick up on known issues and obvious sensor malfunctions, so hopefully with a device in hand they will have a better understanding of the issue.

The good news is that it seems Apple is now aware and is on it.

I'm reading posts here saying that support has been contacted and that Apple is working on a fix. Yet other posts say that they spoken to support and this is an "unknown issue". How can this issue be unknown to Apple? See articles below.

I'd like my watch back (I returned it after 2 day because in a dark environment it became unusable).

My doctor who I saw yesterday, has one. He was unaware of the issue. He turned the light off in the exam room, and there it was, the super-dim display. He's had the watch for a month and hadn't noticed it until then. He's not returning it though because it hasn't been an issue for him like it was for me. Guess he hasn't needed it in a dark environment.

Hi I bought a new Apple Watch ultra 2 last night and was very happy with it, at first didn't go to bed until late as I was setting it up. When I turned the bedroom lights off about 11 pm as it was about time to go to sleep I thought I would check at my blood glucose as I am a diabetic and have my current blood glucose as a complication via an app shuggah that continuously monitors my blood sugars I noticed that the screen was unreadable as it was so dim turned the light back on and instantly the display was nice and bright again noticed that my bloods were way too low had to get up and eat otherwise I could have gone into a diabetic coma. I went into settings display and brightness and turned brightness to max, still didn't make much of a difference. Been up most of the night, reset all and tried again with the same issue. I am very impressed with the watch, but there is a major bug with the software I guess as it should get brighter in a darker place, not the opposite!! like I said I have been up most of the night trying everything to fix this to no avail and upon googling there are hundreds of people having the same issue, so I guess I will ring apple in a couple of hours time and see what they have to say if they acknowledge the issue then I will keep it as they will fix it if not then I will return it for my money back within the 14 days.

I want to come with an update on the issue. Apple has also reached out for me and we have done a lot of diagnostics and logging. They have received a lot of data from me and word is they finally take this seriously! They say they work on this and the engineers are in high gear! We HOPE its gonna be fixed soon via software update.

Thanks all for participating in this feedback and awareness!

I also contacted Support after becoming part of this thread. Sent the diagnostic logs and did all of the remote analysis the rep instructed. She was very helpful and escalated my case as probably with most. Set a call back time 3 days later with me and indicated that the engineers weren’t pleased with the logs because they claimed the problem wasn’t happening at the time the log was taken. I was indoors and in fact it was occurring. Engineers instructed her to request new logs from the device, but she ran into trouble on her end generating another link to me for what reason, I don’t know. She apologized and said she would reach back out after she spoke with them again. Haven’t heard back yet. This was three days ago. Rep did indicate that engineering was NOT aware of this issue we all have. Thought I would share because it’s seems we are all getting conflicting information and experiences from Apple

I just finished another frustrating chat session with Apple support.

My takeaway - We're wasting our time and being ignored. Apple markets this watch with a certain battery life. And to accomplish that, they've thrown us all under the bus. I can just see the Apple Legal team telling the Product Dev Team, "We've already said the battery will last x-hours in all of our marketing. There's no walking this back now."

So if you still have the watch:

  • learn to live with an $800 watch that has text so dim in dark environments that you can't read it
  • return the watch if you can
  • cut your losses and sell it "as-is". And in this case "As-is" mean unreadable in the dark

Unbelievably shady behavior from Apple. What happened to this company?

Here are some responses to me asking the chat support agent if this is a known issue or not. (Edited to remove names)

I was able to gather leads on this issue from our resources and we do have an Escalation Team that gathers more details from affected device/users. Right now, there are no specific issues confirmed with the model and it is still being investigated.

---------------

Additionally, I would like to let you know that issues has been reported not just with the Watch Ultra 2 model. So a possible software update may be released if it is confirmed to be a software issue.

---------------

We have received reports but it is not yet a known or confirmed issue. As I shared earlier, details are being gathered for these cases as of the moment to confirm what is the root cause of the issue. I understand that there are multiple threads about this showing up online so let's make sure that we get our information from Apple to avoid misinformation.

So much for Apple being the company all about user experience. I don't think Steve Jobs would have allowed this to go on. Miss that guy.

sure, they could say that… But that’s true on every single device that they claim battery life on. The stated claim for battery life is always… I repeat… Always… Dependent upon usage and settings. They absolutely could simply warn you when you crank up brightness, or perhaps turn off auto brightness… Or perhaps offer a means of setting a minimum brightness. Phones do this… Computer screens do this… iPads do this. They warn you that you may impact battery life, and at that point on diminished battery life is on the user. That’s fine. All we are asking is that they give us the ability to decide how we use our batteries and prioritize usefulness over uselessly long battery life.

Thats not what they told me! They said they are looking into it and it should not be that dim. At least this supporter did! But honestly I am concerned that they wont fix it, which would be INCREDIBLE!

If they are so afraid it would void their battery claim they should simply put a disclaimer saying IF YOU DISABLE AMBIENT LIGHT SENSOR you would know and agree that battery time are getting reduced! ... YES!

I think selling a product which are unreadable in amazing in a very bad way. There are a lot of ways they can fix this and just require the user to say OK or something like that. The most ideal thing would be to disable auto light like on the phone.. I never use it... second best is to raise the lower minimum. I also sent log and diag info. Guess we will have to see.... I find it hard to believe they would simply ignore it, also taken into account this post has been seen almost by 8000 people soon.
