iPhone 15 overheating

Hi everyone. I’ve recently purchased the new iPhone 15 pro max and it is heating up even when I’m not using it.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue or if it maybe a setting that is causing it that I can turn off?

Any advice is appreciated. :)

For all of you:

Do a simple Forced Restart on your new iPhone by:

  • Press and quickly release the volume up button
  • Then immediately press and quickly release the volume down button
  • Then immediately press and KEEP HOLDING the side power button and KEEP HOLDING it past the swipe to shut down and KEEP HOLDING it until the Apple Logo appears, then let go

Sign back in with your passcode when the phone prompt you and let the phone settle down over the next couple days. If you transferred a LOT of data, it can days for the indexing process to complete. There is likely NOTHING wrong with your phones.

Based on what you're saying, I would have your phone checked at your Apple Store. I had a 51 minute call on my phone the other night. I lost 2% battery in that 51 minutes and my phone didn't even get the slightest bit warm. Other than the first couple days of indexing the data, I've had NO heating issues using anything on my phone. And I stream music just about every day for no less than an hour at a time, with no heating issues. NONE.

One of the challenges of software development is testing.

With a major release like iOS 14, 15, 16, 17, the primary focus is always on new features rollout. While there is significant emphasis on Beta testing it’s never as comprehensive as testing during mass user adoption. Increasing the testing window delays product rollout and that’s not good for staying ahead of the competition.

That’s why Apple has expanded and offered Beta testing to the public.

The subsequent smaller releases will address issues and make it better.

When someone is first in line to buy and use a brand new product, one needs to be aware of this. It will be fixed but have some patience. It’s been only 2 weeks.

IPHONE 15 PRO MAX - 24 hours old!

Just set my new IPhone 15 Pro Max up yesterday and it was off all night and this am i opened phone and checked weather and made a couple of calls… i then went to move a couple of loose apps into folders and I could not even touch the screen. There was also a noticeable burning odor. I called apple and they tried to do diagnostics and that failed several times. She said they are working on the issue. I am floored… $1500 for a new phone and already returned my iPhone 12 Pro Max.. not sure what to do or how they will magically repair this issue. The apple rep said i can order a new phone and then return this one but might have same issue. She said if she processed it, she would be sending me a phone that is serialized differently than a new phone and I asked what that meant .. she wouldn’t say so i asked if a brand new phone would be sent and she finally admitted that it will not be a new phone. I had to pull the truth out of her, instead of her saying the replacement are just serialized differently, just say the replacement will be a refurb or what they really are. I am not paying $1500 for a new phone and having apple send me a refurb! I do not know what others are doing??!? I am not sure if I should just go ahead and buy another one now or wait.

i know Apple is blaming Instagram and something else, but I don’t use it! I saw someone said they went in and turned off Voice Over.. I checked that and mine was aleady off! What is everyone else going to do with their new phones? TIA

I have issues with my iphone 15 pro max, but i have updated to IOS 17.0.3 today but the battery life even became worse and battery drooped by 7% in just 2mins. I dont even know what is happening with the battery life of brand new iphone. Dear apple please fix the battery issue

Apple isn't here, so asking them to do anything here isn't going to help you. This is a user to user only forum.

I've updated to iOS 17.0.3 on our 15 pro and 15 Pro Max (then I Forced Restarted both iPhones, which I do after EVERY iOS update) and am having absolutely no battery drain issues. It's been hours since I did the update and the batteries are not draining at all.

Did you Force Restart after the update? If not, do so and then see if things settle down.

If they don't, schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and let Apple test your phone.

This is getting hot after the update (reset and all that tips), today I tested and in less of 1 min of same in a call or less of 1 min of taking photos or video, it put around 42º Celsius. In the back right side, near the volume buttons, very hot.

And this does not happen on my old Iphone 13 PRO ever, only when playing a heavy game or a very long long call (and not even closer).

As soon I stop browsing or making things with the phone it cool down... but I never see something like that.

I don't hold or use my phone while it is charging. I do check to make sure it's not getting too warm, and my 15 Pro Max, gets warm while charging, but never too hot to hold.

What are you using to charge your new iPhone? Do you charge by the USB C cable which came with the phone and if so, what charging plug do you use and it's wattage? Do you use a wireless charger? Do you use MagSafe?

Ok, so I gave the 17.0.3 update a few days to settle before judging the heat/battery life.

The heat seems to be better, my iPhone 15 Pro runs very cool and I didn't experience any overheating.

For the battery life I don't have any idea because the battery stat is totally off. Yesterday I had a 40-minutes FaceTime video call, but the battery stat shows 20 minutes ScreenOnTime for Facetime which doesn't make any sense.

But if I'm gonna review the battery based on the stats and graphs I'm seeing, I would say the battery life is below average at best.

The apple 20w charger supports 5v/3A (15w) and 9v/2.2A (20w), like other manufacturers, iPhone also chooses the input while charging, this heating issue comes when the initial thrust i.e., to do 50% in 30 mins or so which means the phone chooses 5v/3A. Once 50-60% charging is done, it switches to 9v/2.2A.

As per my observation, the issue only comes when the input is 3A. In other words, it is not able to manage the heat generated by 3A charging while it is good with 2.2A, I dont know it could be battery getting over-heated or some circuitry.

In any case, I would prefer to do 50% in 5-10 more minutes (with 2.2A) rather than invite other risks with frequent heating upon every charge. To me it doesn't make sense to be 5-10 mins efficient.

If Apple can't fix it, they should either reduce charging amperage or do a replacement. Having said that, I am not sure why it is not with every phone, may be the issue is limited to some specific blocks.

Just to let you know how the story ended: I went to the Genius Bar and they attended me very well, they already knew about the problem but not officially, they knew because they had read about it, they did not tell me if more people had gone there with the problem, but cautiously at the table where I sat waiting for them to test the iPhone, there was another person who had the same problem, he was alerted with the heat that the phone got and even told me that he had bought a case in the hope that it would be less noticeable, which did not work. I also heard a conversation of another person complaining about the same thing but I was at a distance that I could not hear everything. In the end I was more than an hour, they tried to reset it without success because as I had tested the beta for some reason I could not reinstall the official version 17.03 or 17.02, they did not get it even with a special computer they had with an iPhone own software that resets in a deeper way. Finally they offered to refund my money even though the 14 days had passed, which I gladly accepted. I am convinced that Apple will fix this problem, but I prefer to wait and see how this story develops.

No is not. Not as hot it gets. The Genius Bar that got my iPhone for the hot it gets, said to me that is not normal, nor to be as hot it get just playing YouTube, taking 5 photos only or even ne minute call or any of the, more or less, problems of peolple described here by the users with this issue. So stop saying that please, that not help tho the people with this issue. That’s the reason the Apple Store manager decided to take my iPhone in return. So please help people taking to the Genius Bar for resolve, just saying it’s a normal thing that’s not help in anyway, could be phones that have problems and need revision of a real expert.

This is what happens:

  • iPhone 15 pro overheats right after you spent like $2,000 on it (in my case. - purchased top end pro max overseas)
  • keeps overheating the next few days
  • people post here, outraged
  • after 1 or 2 weeks their iPhone has finally downloaded these 60,000 pictures from iCloud and it’s now smooth and cool as it should be
  • people never post an update here

next person buys it. Repeat.

This is not a new iPhone issue. I’ve had my phone since September 2023. Last night, I was away from home and I turned on the Alexa app on my iPhone and let Brown Noise play for about 3 1/2 hours. My phone was so hot, that It burned my hand. It got hot and the temperature light turned on charging in my car for about 45 minutes driving the other day. I had to hold it outside in frigid weather to let it cool off to use my gps app. None of my previous iPhones have ever done that in such a short period of time, it would take hours for them to get warm on the inside car charger. This is a problem directly related to this phone. For knowledge base, I buy a the newest Pro or Pro Max every year and have been an iPhone/Apple user since the first iPhone
