iPhone 15 overheating

Hi everyone. I’ve recently purchased the new iPhone 15 pro max and it is heating up even when I’m not using it.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue or if it maybe a setting that is causing it that I can turn off?

Any advice is appreciated. :)

For all of you:

Do a simple Forced Restart on your new iPhone by:

  • Press and quickly release the volume up button
  • Then immediately press and quickly release the volume down button
  • Then immediately press and KEEP HOLDING the side power button and KEEP HOLDING it past the swipe to shut down and KEEP HOLDING it until the Apple Logo appears, then let go

Sign back in with your passcode when the phone prompt you and let the phone settle down over the next couple days. If you transferred a LOT of data, it can days for the indexing process to complete. There is likely NOTHING wrong with your phones.

For me the problem is now just with calls. It begins to overheat on calls longer than 5 mins.

Just tried to call (room to room) an iPhone 14 still on iOS 16:

  • iPhone 15 Pro - 10 mins call 5 points of battery lost - overheating
  • iPhone 14 - same 10 mins call 1 point of battery lost - cold

iPhone 15 Pro not overheating is low power mode enabled.

If I was having such an issue on either of our 15 Pro Models (I'm not), but if I was, I'd be inclined to wait for an update. This topic has gotten press and one has to be Apple is working on it. But it's your phone, so what I would do isn't what you should necessarily do. You do have 14 days to return the phone for full refund (you must have the original box and all accessories included). You have to decide what's best for you.

My iphone 15 pro 256GB is not overheating I tried to do what people say can cause overheating like shoot a 4K video at 60fps, or charge the phone with android cables, magsafe, watch videos, it's not overheating. When new I started it as a new iphone, after set up I have restarted the phone, updated all apps and I upgraded to IOS 17.0.2 ....check your background app refresh too, I just enable it for 1 or 2 apps

Indeed, I think that Apple has one of the best if not the best support which is not only virtual but you can take your iphone to a store, so if you have a problem with your just bought iphone I'd expect you would rush back to the store rather than posting on a forum. At the store your iphone can be tested and it's covered by a no fuss warranty. So the cases tested at the store could count as overheating iphone cases rather than what people might think or feel after a few hours or days using the new iphone.

I'm not saying there are some who may actually have an issue. But this thread has over exaggerated this issue, in some ways absurdly. And like you said, if I had an issue, instead of adding a me too post to a forum, I'd be visiting my Apple Store Genius Bar. Makes one wonder if some posters are not exactly real?

Your other phone didn't have USB C and fast charge capability. What wattage charger are you using? If anything higher than 15 watts, heat is normal when charging a battery. I've have just about every iPhone Apple has ever brought out. And almost every one of them got warm when being charged. That's what happens to batteries chemically, when ions excite the battery to create a charge. It creates heat. You could use an old 5w charger to charge your phone if you don't want any heat. It will take hours to charge, but it will charge cooler.

This is a new phone with a new chip and a new OS.

The fact that only some folks are reporting issues point to a likely non-hardware problem, as hardware or engineering issues will affect all users.

I don’t believe every app have been optimized and thoroughly tested on this, maybe even Apple’s own.

We are at an early adopter phase and we need to let Apple resolve this with OS updates and app fixes. Likewise 3rd party app developers.

Let’s define what overheating means. Temperature above normal operating temperature which causes the device to stop working or degradation in performance, thermal shutdown or something else. I agree, under normal operation it should not do that, and by normal operation I mean using the device as intended. Charging the device under pillow is not an intended way of using it.

Apple did release a statement indicating that a few factors are causing this for some users under normal operation, an OS bug and a 3rd party bug, which is most likely related to the OS bug IMHO.

I was really hoping I would be one to not experience any of these issues, as this is my first iPhone and I was hoping to switch to the Apple ecosystem with no hiccups, but alas... thought I'd just share my experience here.

I started using my iPhone 15 Pro Max about 4 days ago. First few days went great, and no overheating at all. I also only used the phone on WiFi and charged using the USB-C cable from my old Android phone. I wasn't transferring anything from an old phone nor restoring from a backup. This is my first iPhone. I installed a few apps, and it all worked fine. Made a few video calls on Facebook Messenger, that too was all okay. Today I connected my SIM to the phone, and made a FB Messenger call over 5G, and it drained the battery super fast and got very hot. I'm not sure it was quite in the realm of what some people have been saying (cant even hold it), but it was certainly hot enough to be quite uncomfortable to hold and I was concerned about something being damaged. Furthermore, I am currently charging it using an Apple 35W dual charger, and it's also very hot then (even when I switched back to WiFi). Even after being off charge for about 10 minutes, and it was still very warm to the touch.

Just to test if it was an issue with the charger, I have plugged in my previous S22 Ultra into the same charger, which has been notoriously bad in terms of getting hot (I have the Exynos version), and even after 20 mins it's still cool to the touch. I've just put my iPhone back on charge and it's again heating up very quickly (as mentioned, I'm using the included USB-C cable with the official Apple 35W dual slot charger). The temperature is much higher than my S22U when charging, and hot enough to be uncomfortable. Also this charging was done without a case.

I should also note that the only apps I have on my phone are Facebook Messenger and a few authenticator apps. I dont have any of the commonly mentioned apps such as Instagram etc. I wonder if the issue is due to the new SIM card or higher power charger, as I had no issues before on WiFi on lower power charging.

I really hope Apple can resolve whatever the issue is without compromising or dialing back features. This is my first Apple product (and I got an Apple Watch Ultra 2), and I've heard usually great things about them, so hoping to switch over to the ecosystem...

I think its fine the read complaints, as it gives an indication of how widespread the issue is. The others in this thread who are being militant about *their* iPhone not heating are being pointless. It's fine for people to note their complaints and raise the issue.

Anyway, I agree with your points, it would be even more useful to actually try to see what patterns are causing this issue. I'll share mine:

  • Fresh iPhone 15 Pro Max, no restoration from backup or transfer.
  • Worked perfectly fine and cool to the touch, and great battery life.
  • Only installed app was Facebook Messenger.
  • After connecting to eSIM and to network, battery life took a hit (even on WiFi).
  • Messenger video call on 5G drained battery super fast and heated up the phone.
  • Putting it on charge also heated it up significantly.
  • Heat was not scalding hot, but enough to make it difficult to hold for more than a few seconds. Think like a fresh cup of tea on the outside. No temperature warning though.
  • I had been using the phone lightly for 2/3 days before this and had no issue.

I havent done what many others have done yet, such as making normal phone calls or taking long videos or playing games. For me, this reads like some sort of charging / network optimization issue, as it was working beautifully before (and I was hoping maybe I'd gotten one without any issues!). That feels fixable in a software update, but what do I know...
